  • Letter from AHP to C. C. Wilson, RE: AHP couldn't possible run for President of the United States, as Wilson suggested, but she appreciates the thought. AHP agrees with the things Wilson said, but thinks that it is not helpful to go back and say what might have been. It is better to focus on what actually happened and to try to make an improvement in the future. AHP is working now on the demonstration in the Hague from May 12-14 against the spread of nuclear weapons, and particularly the giving of nuclear weapons to NATO. AHP does not think that it would be beneficial for women to start a separate political movement. AHP does not like to see separation of the sexes in politics, and believes that the world can only be improved by men and women going forward together. AHP agrees that women must take much more political action than they have in the past, but she believes that women are doing this. AHP thinks that women will play a much greater role in the future than they have in the past, and that we must, in this country, educate women and teach them that it is their duty to take an active part in the affairs of the world. [Filed under AHP Correspondence: (General Correspondence, Peace and Political), #4.5]

  • Letter from Virginia Durr to AHP, RE: Very much enjoyed meeting Peter and his family. After Durr's trip to England, it is tough to get back to Alabama, where the governor is running for President on a straight-out racist ticket. If AHP ever gets to England, Durr hopes that she can go to Cambridge to meet Joan Robinson, who impressed Durr more than any other woman she met in England. Also enjoyed meeting J. D. Bernal's present wife or mistress, Margot Heinemann. Both Robinson and Heinemann invited Durr to the Hague, but she does not have enough time or money to attend. Durr is glad that AHP is going, because she knows that it will go somewhere definite and not stay in the realm of broad statements. Asks AHP about the WILPF group that is going to Russia. Wonders if AHP might be able to visit Alabama on her way back from Europe. Asks about the building of the house at the Pauling ranch. • Letter from Hans Thirring to LP, RE: Invites LP to join him in an action toward disarmament. Thirring is trying to start a movement for complete disarmament of neutral countries, beginning with Austria. However, there are some influential people in Austria who do not share Thirring's optimism regarding Khrushchev's attitude. Khrushchev has, in both a speech in Vienna and a letter to Thirring, said that the Soviets are convinced that the ultimate superiority of their system of communism will eventually become clear enough to induce all people to adopt it by their own will, and, therefore, the Soviets will never try to drive other nations into communism by war. Thirring would like Khrushchev to issue a declaration echoing these statements which is unambiguous enough to convince those who doubt his intentions. In order to convince Khrushchev to do this, Thirring wants to send a request to him, signed by a number of prominent scientists, including LP. Thirring's request is enclosed, and a handwritten note in the margin of the letter indicates that LP signed it. 7 April 1964

    Mr. Charles Didzun

    609 Sixth Street

    Oswego, Oregon

    Dear Charley:

I thought of you the other day, while my wife and I were at our ranch, at Salmon Creek, Big Sur, California, and we were eating one of the cans of salmon that you had given us - a fine Chinook that you had caught on April 7, 1962. I think that it was the best salmon that I have ever eaten.

We have had many experiences since our last talk with you. Our trip to Oslo, Norway last December to attend the ceremonies at which the Peace Prize was presented was a great one.

I think that I told you that my wife and I had bought a 160-acre ranch at Salmon Creek, eight years ago. Now we are just beginning to build a house there, and we plan to spend a major part of our time there. We have only a two-room cabin there now. We have white-faced Hereford cattle, about 30 head.

I do not know when we shall come to Oregon again, but when we do we are hoping to see you.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:ffd

    Dear Mamma,

Thank you for your letter. It sounds that you have done very well in selling the Merc. It had one spotlight which should be in the trunk. Linus is coming this afternoon. I shall be pleased to see him.

You would be more comfortable at Kay Coles. You would have to sleep in a room either with us or the children here. Only the top floor is habitable at the moment.

My green wooden toll box is in the garage. I would like to have it along with some of my things.

Our home is now going very slowly. I succeeded in keeping the contractor in business at some cost to myself in work and money but I could have done it cheaper and easier and sooner if I had done it differently.

We shall be very pleased to see you.

    Love from,
    Peter
