  • Letter from Gerda Otteun to AHP, RE: Otteun was sorry to have heard about the broken bowl and agrees that Kähler may not have packed it well enough. She talked to Kähler, who said that he had forgotten to have the bowl insured. Kähler takes the loss himself and is now working on a new bowl. Some of Otteun's friends told her that nearly half of the delicate things they send to the U.S. are smashed no matter how they pack it. Some people think that the negroes treat the packages roughly deliberately, but do not blame them since Danes working in a German post office would probably do the same. Feelings have been very strong in favor of the negroes in Denmark recently. Otteun describes the great difficulty that she and her husband had in getting visas to travel to America. She enjoyed the trip very much, but she was shocked by the negro situation and the riots in New York. She discusses the cold treatment that she initially received from the negro staff at the hotel, and how much the situation reminds her of how the Danish treated the German occupants during World War II. Eventually, Otteun got to talk to some negro staff members, and they eventually got along very nicely. Otteun discusses the situation of African Americans in great detail, and hopes that America can find a way to move past the racial tensions that now exist.
