  Dear Mr. Tung:

  I have been pleased to read your letter of 10 November, which I found awaiting me after my return from a lecture tour.

  It is fine that you are now a freshman student at M.I.T. I hope that you get along well in your studies and in your career.

  As to your questions, let me say first that there are various ways to prepare yourself for the study of structural chemistry. I think that it is necessary to get a good background in physics and mathematics, if you plan to work in the field of theoretical chemistry. To do this, you may major either in physics or in chemistry. I suggest that you talk with Professor John C. Slater, in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and get advice from him. He is an outstanding man in the field of molecular structure.

  As to bio-chemistry, you might find it worthwhile to look over the book by Fruton & Fruton. There is no need, I think, for you to begin the study of bio-chemistry, at this stage in your career — you can take that later.

  Dear Peter,

  We came home from Australia the middle of November exhausted and the Daddy left immediately for another week speaking tour in the East. He came home the day before Thanksgiving and we spent that holiday at the Deer Flat Ranch with Linda and Family and Crellin and Family (who are now at Stanford). It was really fun to see the little boy and girls playing together. We had a whole slew of little new calves so Nature seemed one vast procreation.

  11 December

  We've been interrupted as you can see. Did you send Bernstein the signatures he needed to register the Mercedes?

  We are glad your house is coming so well. I enclose $25.00 which I wish you to use to get Thomas a $10 or $15 mechano set or erector set and the rest $10 or $12 a nice doll for Sarah. Put cards on them from Grandma and Grandpa Pauling. Please don’t use the money for anything else. This if it is done, seems to me to be dishonest.

  I’m sorry not to have had time to get a box off to them. I’m not sure it is wise, however, to try and get clothes for them! I seem never to get the right ones and it takes a long bit of time.

  I had a good letter from my great friend Virginia Dunn who said Cliff had seen you in Fondson [?]. They are fun – especially unexpected [?].

  We are thinking of a family reunion at Deer Flat Ranch (a house warming for our new house which is going to be lovely) at the Easter Holiday. Easter is 18 April this year. Do you think your family might be able to come then? Perhaps better to wait until summer? What do you think? I’m so glad Julia is finding something interesting to do. I wish she’d return to school.

  We've read the most exciting book written by many people (C.P. Snow etc.) about Bernal. He is a remarkable man alright.

  I am sorry that I have been delayed in answering your letter of 20 November - first by my absence on a trip to the eastern United States, and then by illness.

  First, let me mention that the structures of a number of polyborate minerals have been determined by x-ray diffraction, during recent years. Most of this work seems to me to be reliable. These structures almost without exception involve either a tetrahedral arrangement of four oxygen atoms around a central boron atom or a plainer arrangement of three oxygen atoms around a central boron atom.

  I think that there is sound theoretical reason for the planarity of a group of three oxygen atoms around a boron atom, and that the configuration that you assign to boron atoms can be confidently ruled out. The structure given in your Figure 4 is, on the other hand, a structure that is compatible with known structural principles.

  I have been wanting to write to you, but have not wanted to disturb you during the period of the year when you are so busy.

  My wife and I have had a very difficult and strenuous period of our life, during the last two months. First, we spent one month in Australia, from 15 October to 15 November. We had been invited by the Australian Congress for International Cooperation and Disarmament. We participated in the Congress, which was, I think, a great success. I estimate that about 15 thousand different people were present at the meetings of which either my wife or I, or both of us, spoke. We gave two or three talks every day, and visited all of the principal cities of Australia and a number of the smaller ones.

  The Congress was conducted very well. The only unsatisfactory aspect of it was that the Government of Australia attacked it, with the false contention that it was dominated by Communists. We were able to satisfy ourselves that this was not true. The Congress was arranged by University people and professional people whom we had met before, for the most part, and was conducted in a thoroughly democratic way.

  Nevertheless, the government refused visas to some of the people who had been invited from foreign countries, and the United States government cooperated by holding up, in transit, one of the people who had been invited, a professor in the University of Chile.

  After our return last month, I spent ten days on a lecture tour of the eastern and middle western United States. Both in Australia and on this tour I gave lectures on science and medicine as well as on peace.

  Then my wife became ill, with a severe infection, which has settled in her ears and has not yet been healed. I am hoping that she will be well before long.

  We are very happy, as I am sure you are, that the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for 1964 to Martin Luther King has been received with such great approval. I was especially pleased that the people of Oslo were so enthusiastic, as reported in Time and Newsweek, and in the American newspapers, also. I enclose the page from Time. I think that my wife is sending you a page from the local newspaper.

  We both send you our love, and our best wishes for Christmas and a Happy New Year.

  In my opinion, the death penalty does not have a place in contemporary society. I believe that we have now obtained enough insight into the motivations of actions of human beings to permit us to attack the problem of crime and punishment in a new way. I believe that the death penalty should be abolished.

  The sum comes to 11,200 in Norwegian kroner. In fact, I paid 11,500 kroner to Mrs. Rosenqvist, this being the sum mentioned by her in a letter to me. I think that the difference of 300 kroner may be the cost of packing.
