    Mr. Dean Rusk

    The Secretary of State

    United States State Department

    Washington 25, D.C.

    My Dear Mr. Secretary

I write again to ask that my wife, Ava Helen Pauling, and I be given permission to travel to Cuba, at the request of the Emergency Committee for Disaster Belief to Cuba, in order to inspect the channels of distribution for over $30,000 worth of medicine and medical allies already sent to Cuba, by the Emergency Committee for Disaster Relief to Cuba, and to investigate the possible need for additional disaster relief relating to the damage done by the hurricane.

In particular, we have been informed that 30,000 children under 10 years of age have been evacuated from the disaster area (statement by Dr. Oscar Vargas-Mendez, UNICEF Regional Director), and that a network of Health Centers and Rural Hospital Units to provide care for the mothers and children is being set up. We hope that our trip to Cuba will provide information such as to permit further action by the Emergency Committee for Disaster Relief to Cuba that would decrease the amount of human suffering caused by the disastrous hurricane.

I shall be grateful to you for your help in expediting action on our request.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:ffd
