Tells LP that the Medina facility is planning to close in July 1966 and that he thinks this may have a connection with the explosion last fall. • Letter from LP to Clark Kerr, President, University of California. LP has just learned that, because of a misunderstanding on his part, he did not handle the matter of his appointment at the University of California in Santa Barbara properly. LP's letter of May 1 was sent to Kerr because LP thought that the Dean, the Chancellor, and Fred Wall, the new chairman of the Chemistry Department, had submitted to the Regents a formal recommendation of LP's appointment. Two hours ago, Chancellor Cheadle told LP that the formal recommendation had not been submitted, and that the matter had only been mentioned informally. LP shall accordingly refrain from further action until the formal recommendation has been acted on in a proper manner. [Filed under LP Personal Safe, Drawer #2, Folder #2.006]

  • Letter from LP to Lothar Schulze RE: LP says he is pleased to accept Schulze’s invitation to become a member of Kuratorium of the Gessellschaft zur Förderung von Zukunfts-und Friedensforschung. LP says that it would be better for him as a member to be in a position to participate in person rather than through correspondence. LP says that if Schulze were to set up a category of international sponsors, then LP would prefer to be a sponsor rather than a member of the Kuratorium.[Handwritten note in top right: “Membership.”] [Letter from Schulze to LP: May 20, 1964] [Filed under LP Correspondence: S: Correspondence, 1964-1965: Box #383 Folder #383.1]

  • Letter from LP to Vernon I. Cheadle, Chancellor, University of California at Santa Barbara, RE: LP learned from Cheadle an hour ago that Cheadle had not submitted papers recommending LP's appointment at UCSB to the Regents, as LP had been led to understand by Fred Wall. LP has talked with Wall, who did not know that the official recommendation for LP's appointment had not been made. It is LP's understanding tat Wall will now request that the recommendation be submitted. LP clarifies that the time devoted to his research at UCSB will not be infringed upon by his time working at the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions. LP plans to devote about three quarters of his time to scientific research and one quarter to other interests, especially world peace. According to the rules of the University, which allow one day per week for outside activities, LP plans to work full time as a University Professor.
