Letter from A. Hunter Dupree, Department of History at the University of California, Berkeley, to LP RE: Thanks LP for sending him a transcription of his notes in the back of Science–The Endless Frontier and says that he would be glad to know if LP finds documents in his files relating to science legislation. Notes that he was interested to learn that LP advocated the contribution by industrial corporations to basic research, which Dupree mentions in his book, Science in Federal Government. Letter from AHP to LP, RE: Yesterday was one of the most inspiring and dramatic affairs AHP has ever seen. The crowd was estimated to be between 300,000 and 500,000, which is more people than AHP has ever seen at one time. AHP spoke at the meeting and marched with the President of the Peace Society, Mickey Theodorakis, who is a very famous young composer. Everyone seemed happy to see AHP. There were excellent editorials in all the Scandinavian papers commending AHP for not taking advantage of her name and getting through customs with bribery. Had AHP bribed the officials by revealing herself, the meeting in the Hayne would not have taken place. Today at the bank, AHP found a $20 bill on the floor and everyone was surprised that she turned it in. Dear Paddy,

Yesterday was one of the most inspiring and dramatic affairs that I have ever seen. We had to be up at 3.30 a.m. to be ready at 4.15 to go to get the bus which was to take us to Marathon to begin the walk to Athens. The bus didn't come (they suspect police interference) We took a taxi and got near and than walked back several miles with the marchers.

They estimate the crowd here in Athens to have been 300,000 and 500,000. Certainly more than I have ever seen at one time. I spoke at the meeting here and marched with the President of the Peace Society, Micky Theodorakis the M.P. who has taken Lambrakis' place and who is a very famous young composer who wrote for Behans plays, and many other things. We have heard his songs on Linda's Edith Peaf records. I met Dragoumis' brother Mark. I cannot tell you how splendid it is here and how incredible the Greek people are. Dragoumis said that the fascist government which they had here was destroyed by Lambrakis death. Every one mourns him and Mickey was certainly the hero along the March and people threw flowers, etc. Thy all seemed happy to see me too. I have much to tell you. I wonder if all mail from Greece is looked at.

We are going to have more and more difficulties I fear.

How are you getting along? There were excellent editorials in all the Scandinavian papers at least and the general feeling of pride in me for not taking advantage of my name and getting in by bribery was really a reaffirmation of the belief in honor and integrity. Had I bribed the officials by revealing myself this meeting in the Hayne would not have taken place.

Today when we went to the bank to change some money. I found a $20 bill on the floor and turned it in to everyone's surprise including Mary's. It was just lying on the floor at the bar where people go to change money. I should probably have insisted on its being returned to me if the owner wasn't found but I didn't.

Letter from LP to Charles O. Porter, RE: LP was sorry to see in the papers that Porter was not successful in the primary election. LP received Porter's letter of May 5 too late because he was traveling, and LP regrets not having been able to take any action about the letter. AHP is in the Hague, demonstrating with other women against nuclear weapons for NATO. She was initially refused entry into the Netherlands, but the government reconsidered. Letter from LP to Edmund G. Brown, Governor, California, RE: LP writes to Brown, as Chairman of the Board of Regents of the University of California, about a matter of importance. Last year LP accepted an appointment at the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions in Santa Barbara. LP's appointment in Santa Barbara gives him freedom to work in the ways that seem best to him, and he plans to devote about three quarters of his time to science and medicine and one quarter of his time to science and world affairs, just as he has done for many years. LP feels that his research in science and medicine would be greatly aided by association with UCSB, as a member of the staff without salary. LP was invited to accept an appointment by the incoming Chairman of the Chemistry Department, but was then informed that the appointment had not been approved by the Board of Regents. LP talked to President Kerr, and the matter will now be taken up at a Board meeting later this week. LP can't believe that the Board, after giving serious consideration to the matter, would reject LP's appointment, without salary, at UCSB. LP writes to inform Brown of the matter. Dear Miss Engel:

I am writing in answer to your letter of 5 May, in which you ask about my present research budget.

In this answer I am not including work in the California Institute of Technology under my direction, which will come to an end approximately 30 June 1964, when my resignation from the California Institute of Technology become effective (I am now on leave of absence as professor of chemistry).

I expect to have two research funds available in the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions. One is from a grant made to the California Institute of Technology for support of my research by Dr. and Mrs. Linus Pauling, Jr. The donors have given permission for the remaining fund in this grant, about $10,000, to be transferred to the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions.

The second is the remaining sun in a grant made by The Ford Foundation to the California Institute of Technology for support of my researches in the field of chemistry in relation to medicine. The total grant was $450,000. About $40,000 will remain unused on 30 June 1964. I have asked The Ford Foundation for permission for the California Institute of Technology to transfer the remaining sum to the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions, and have stated that I plan to use the money for the purposes for which the grant was made. My request is now under consideration by The Ford Foundation.

I plan to carry on theoretical scientific work in the future, but my associates and I shall have to devote considerable time to preparing the results of our experimental work for publication. Probably two of my associates in research on anesthesia will work for a period of three to six months with me on this activity. They are Dr. Arthur Cherkin and Dr. Frank Catchpool, each with salary $10,000 per year. My budget for the coming academic year at the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions (1 July 1964 to 30 June 1965) includes accordingly between $5,000 and $10,000 for their salaries. After the period of three to six months they will be carrying on research elsewhere.

In addition, I plan to continue my research assistant, Dr. Gustav Albrecht, during the coming year, with salary $8,000 per year. Some of his work with me is on anesthesia and other problems related to chemistry and medicine, and some is on problems of structural chemistry and other aspects of scientific research.

With his salary of $8,000 and the salaries of Drs. Cherkin and Catchpool for part of the year, and with incidental expenditures - (travel of Dr. Cherkin and Dr. Catchpool from Pasadena to Santa Barbara, 10 percent overhead from The Ford Foundation Grant to the Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions, annuity payments and other benefits, cost of reprints, etc.), the research budget for the year will be in the approximate range $15,000 to $20,000. I think that it is likely that say research projects for following years will be somewhat smaller.
