  Dear Peter:

  I arrived home safely, although a couple of hours late due to high head winds. We had to land at Goose Bay, rather than in Greenland. I have found several letters here from you and I shall answer them in good time. You must remember that I am terribly busy and write some fifty or more letters a week and so that I do not always write them as clearly as I should. I do not now remember exactly the letter which you questioned but I think that I only wanted to assure you of my love for you and your family. I know that it is difficult to always make the wisest decisions.

  I have not heard any more about the need for the Bill of Sale, but I shall try to get a form and send it off to you. Crellin has said he does not know where the documents were and I looked in the Mercedes without finding any papers except directions for starting the car.

Andreen has done her best to suggest a Swedish connection with WSP. Andreen sends a picture of Fredrika Bremer, whose invitation to a Peace Alliance was published in the London Times on August 28, 1854. Andreen tells AHP of a good book about Bremer. • Letter from Edmund G. Brown, Governor, California, to LP, RE: Brown thanks LP for his kind note of April 30. It was a pleasure to send LP the letter when LP received the Passover-Liberty Award by Temple Beth Zion. Brown is glad LP liked it. Brown appreciates the offer LP made in his letter, and assures LP that when problems arise which LP, by virtue of his training and intellect, could solve, Brown will call upon LP. P.S. • Letter from Francis Heisler and Ralph B. Atkinson to LP, RE: Heisler notifies LP that the Supreme Court denied the petition for writ of certiorari in Pauling versus McNamara one week ago. The sentence terminates all further efforts in the U.S. Courts to obtain an injunction against the further testing of nuclear bombs that create radioactive fallout. There isn't really anything else LP and the other plaintiffs can do in the U.S. Courts, but they might hope for some other country to take the matter to the International Court of Justice. Despite the disappointing result, Heisler reminds the plaintiffs that at least one of the three judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals ruled in their favor, and perhaps the matter will be taken up again in the future. In his own message on the same page, Atkinson tells his fellow plaintiffs to take heart that they bore witness to their concern, and to be willing to work now in any other direction which shows concern for the reduction of conflicts. • Letter from Henry Duskis, M.A. to LP RE: Introduces himself as an admirer of LP’s and as the editor of the Forgotten Writings of Mark Twain. Tells LP that a man named Sandor Sigmond is completing what Duskis believes to be the most noteworthy work for the cause of peace and progress. Asks LP to read the section on peace from Sigmond’s work and possibly write an introduction or commentary tot he work.   Dear Bill:

  In answer to your letter, I must say that I agree with you that chemists differ from one another, and I do not subscribe to the idea that chemists are not much good, as a class, after they have reached the age of 30 or 35.

  You might be interested to check the book "Nobel, the Man and His Prizes" (Elsevier Publishing Company, New York, 1962). This book does not in all cases give the date when the discovery was made for which a Nobel Prize was awarded, but you can find much information in it, and could, of course, check the original literature to discover the date.

  I note, for example, that Madame Curie discovered polonium and radium when she was thirty years old. Van't Hoff did much of his work in his twenties, but continued to do good work later. Arrhenius had his Nobel-Prize idea when he was twenty-five and other good ideas later. Giauque was about thirty-two when he invented the method of cooling by demagnetization. Libby was thirty-nine when he developed the carbon-l4 method of measuring age of carbonaceous material.
