  Dear Petie

  I hope that you received the letter from Mr. Braunstein to me with the enclosures which you were to fill out and send back to him. This seems to be important in order for him to have the car registered. He seems to be doing a thorough job, at least, on renovating the car, and as I said to you before has said that you may come and drive it whenever you are in the area. Linie, who is here at the moment, that is, in Pasadena, seems to be quite eager to see the car when it is finished. Crellie is too.

  Yesterday we had a big party here in our garden with Linie and his three boys, and Linda with her three, and several friends, including Herbert Jehle from Washington D.C., and Mary Clarke, with Guy Endore, who is a good author, you know. We had a good time in the garden and I think the children had a good time. Young Linie is an especially sweet child and I think the sweetest of Linie's kids, although the two little girls are very sweet too and have freckles like Linie although his boys do not have freckles. This is interesting. Sabrina in particular looks very much like Linie. They all seem well and I think are getting along all right. The little girls had left the day before to go to Geneva with Christine.

  I have a young woman who has just agreed to do some secretarial work for me, and now we are going to learn how to use the transcriber. We are enjoying being here in Santa Barbara very much. Everyone is very good to us and we go to many parties, and I must say the climate is certainly much better than Pasadena. It is a relief to get out of the smog, too. On Sunday we are going down to a supper party at the beach house which is down there on that lovely strip in Carpinteria. Do you remember that small bit that looks very much like the Mediterranean with the lagoon behind the strip of land where the houses are right along the beach? Perhaps you've forgotten it, because right after this lovely spot comes that hideous growth called “Santa Clause”. I have wondered if I could get up my courage to set a bomb under that or at least start a forest fire. It is the ugliest bit of building and development that I think one can imagine. We send you much love and hope that your house is coming along well and that the children are enjoying having a better place to live. I hope you had a good summer and they haven't needed to wear their cardigans all of the time. They surely did look handsome in them. We send you much love.

• Letter from Arthur Cherkin, CIT, to Dr. Gerald Cohen, Department of Psychiatry at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, cc: LP, RE: Thanks Cohen for his July 22nd letter which answered the question he had concerning lysis after adding liquid chloroform to cells. Explains how Cohen’s experiments impressed them. Tells Cohen that he does not plan to study the effects of anesthetics, but that he believes that a study would be worthwhile. Recommends that chloroform and cyclopropane be studied and that red blood cells are used. Asks if his observation of cyclopropane-hemoglobin interaction is generally known. • Letter from Arthur Cherkin, CIT, to Dr. John C. Krantz, Jr., Professor and Head of Pharmacology at the University of Maryland’s School of Medicine, cc: LP, RE: Provides Krantz with the results of their tests on the seven ampuls of Indoklon that he sent them. Concludes that Indoklon is anesthetic to goldfish at a concentration of 550 mg/l at 10°C, with partial pressure around 28 mm Hg. • Letter from C. W. A. Schurmann, Netherlands Ambassador, to AHP, RE: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Hague has carefully considered AHP's request for reimbursement of the price of a round trip aeroplane ticket from Copenhagen to Amsterdam to Copenhagen. The Ministry is not aware that any official authority promised AHP a refund. Foreign participants in a political demonstration in the Netherlands which implied the risk of a disturbance of public order cannot be granted admission to the country. This is why AHP was initially denied entrance to the country. If she was eventually admitted, this was due to an arrangement with the Ministry of Justice, and does not imply that the original refusal of entry to the Netherlands was unjustified. Therefore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs cannot accept AHP's claim for a refund of her plane fare. Ungar, M.D., D.Sc., Professor of Pharmacology at the Baylor University College of Medicine, to Dr. Arthur Cherkin, CIT, RE: Explains to Ungar the experiments he has been doing on a protease extracted from brain which is inhibited by anesthetic agents, to try to find a correlation between enzyme inhibition and anesthetic potency. Asks if Cherkin knows of any sources where he could find values for the potency of four more anesthetic agents. Notes that they are also working on the fluorescence problem and that he will let Cherkin know the results. • Letter from LP to Mr. H. Ebhardt RE: Tells Ebhardt that he does not understand his remark about the probability that the mutation of the hemoglobin in horses happened before the time that the phenotypes between ponies and horses altered, which was one million years ago. Explains that any mutation in hemoglobin genes that occurred before the separation on ponies from horses would affect the hemoglobin of the horses and the ponies. • Letter from LP to Mr. Thomas Graeff, Haverford State Hospital, RE: Explains that during his survey of the effects of high-energy radiation he has not run across very much about the effects on brain tissue, but he thinks that it is damaged in the same way as other tissues. Estimates that 10% of tissues of cancer are cause by background radiation of about 0.1 roentgen per year. Notes that he        is opposed to unnecessary exposure to x-radiation.
