  Dear Linus:

  Mama and I were very happy to see you and the children.

  Also, we were pleased to learn, when we visited the ranch a couple of days ago, that you had carried out the roundup of the calves, and had done the job of branding, castrating, and injecting them. We have your note about the possibility that later on, perhaps November, you will handle the job of taking them to market. I think that we need to keep our herd down to 25, so that there are about 13 that should be sold, perhaps not all of them at that time the younger ones might be held over. It may be that one of the old cows should be sold. I think that the heifers that we kept last year should remain with the herd.

  We are looking forward to seeing you for a couple of days. We might come to Honolulu on 10 October. I think that we leave on 13 October, but I do not yet have the schedule. Are you expecting to be at home during this period?

• Letter from LP to Mrs. Mary Clarke RE: Returns the manuscript that Clarke and Guy Endore left with him. Explains that he found the article interesting, but that he can not subscribe to it because he does not accept arguments based upon the course of history, since the world has changed. Tells Clarke that he does not believe that the problem of war can be solved by peace treaties and he does like the article’s emphasis on the excitement, courage, and manliness accompanying war. Notes that although it may be true that the Wright brothers first offered the airplane to the army, it is false to say that war is responsible for the airplane. • Letter from LP to Professor Ralph Hultgren, Inorganic Materials Research Division of the University of California Berkeley, RE: Says that Hultgren can work out the correction for molecular oxygen and nitrogen by remembering that a double or triple bond should be compared with 2 or 3 single bonds, respectively. Tells Hultgren that the enthalpy of nitrogen given in NBS Circular 500 is the old value and that the new value came from later investigations. Thanks him for the list of errors on page 94.   Dear Mamma,

  Thank you very much for your letter of the 4th September which I received today. I have not received any letter forwarded by you from Mr. Braunstein with enclosures for me to fill out and send back to him. When did you send it and where did you send it?

  I am pleased that you saw Linus Junior's children and that you like them. I certainly like them very much. I enjoy talking to Linie who seems to be thinking sensible thoughts and he asks sensible questions. I enjoy talking to them all and playing with them.

  We went for a holiday to France. We stayed with a friend of mine who is an Intern in a psychiatric Hospital near Calais. It was fairly cheap which I think was the main reason we went and was reasonably satisfactory though I was rather tense while we were there. There was some conflict of purpose between me and my host and perhaps between him and himself. We did eat well and rest well, however, and it was quite interesting to observe this hospital. We made several trips to the coast including a couple to Belgian where the coast is very nice. It was warm and sunny during our entire stay and we enjoyed playing in the fields and swimming at the coast. I think the thing that Thomas liked most was the Go-karts which are available in a large variety of types and sizes on the Belgian promenades. I had great trouble persuading Thomas that we could not take one home with us and will have to make him one. I think there ought to be a sale for them in England and I would like to try to persuade some small manufacturer to make them here. They are quite expensive but very good. All English children make Go-karts out of a board and the wheels of a pram.

  We are having a little difficulty getting a builder to complete our house. The Architect had arranged for three builders to tender for the job and only one has done so. I will take him if he can do a reasonable job in a reasonable time for a reasonable price. I want very much to get the house finished so I can think about other things and to use it.

  We have had a really excellent summer. It has rained almost none at all and has been hot with the sun shining. The children have run around almost naked most of the summer. Their cardigans are really beautiful they look very nice on them and we all like them very much.

  Dear Daddy,

  I received a number of letters from you being some correspondence to and from Mrs. Lina Weinbaum. They are very interesting. I wish to ask how you got hold of her letter to the British Ambassador in Washington? Reading the correspondence, my respect for the British Civil Service went up a good deal.

  We went for a fortnight's holiday to visit a friend who is a doctor in a Psychiatric Hospital in France. It was quite interesting. They use a technique of Psycho Drama at this hospital. The work being led by a man named Boor. It is a sort of free association group therapy and it may be that the loosening of inhibitions by everyone accepting the sort of artificial concept of a play allows people to relieve themselves more fully.

  Did you ever get the book bill that I sent you? It might easily have got lost in your transfer of houses. I am not particularly worried about it but if it has been lost I'll send you another copy.

  We are having a little trouble getting a builder to complete our house. Of the three people that agreed to tender by last Friday only one has in fact done so. I want very much to get the job finished. I think I will have to do a little work myself and get the heating system to go because it is getting colder now. The one thing I cannot do myself is put the flue in between the boiler and the chimney stack.
