Interview Date: August 25, 2021
Location: Eugene, Oregon; interview recorded over Zoom
Duration: 0:31:18
Dame Peaches Von Killingsworth introduces herself as a performer, a producer, and a vocalist. She defines Burlesque as a teasing performance art framed around human sexuality, absurdism, and humor. Her style of Burlesque is avant-garde with thematically darker undertones and she chooses this art form for its performance art sensibilities.
She describes how the Covid pandemic completely shut down the thriving Burlesque community in Eugene. Because it’s an art form that needs a live audience, and because people weren’t able to gather in public spaces during the pandemic, the art form and community crumbled. She shares how the pandemic put her into a stressful survival mode, with little creative outlet.
Dame Peaches strongly believes that the art form of Burlesque is a force for social change in terms of how it builds community and is an open expression of human sexuality.
