  • Letter from Monte Blau to LP, RE: In response to LP's request for information on Tobias Schwartz, Blau is pleased to give his view of the situation. Schwartz came to the University of Buffalo Graduate School late in 1957. He worked with Blau in the Department of Nuclear Medicine, and made substantial progress on a project dealing with focusing collimators. After a few years, it became clear that Schwartz was more interested in the theoretical aspects of biophysics, so he transferred departments to work with Fred Snell, a decision supported by Blau. He has been working on an apparatus capable of measuring sodium transport and current across toad bladders in the dynamic state with a time resolution of 10 seconds or less. Schwartz will probably finish this project by February, 1965, and it will be a substantial advance over previous attempts in that particular field. Schwartz has always been a good graduate student. His slow progress has mainly been a result of transferring major professors and various technical problems that arose during his attempt to build his apparatus. After Schwartz appeared before HUAC, he was informed that his traineeship would not be renewed as of July, 1964. This action was taken by Dr. George E. Moore, and Moore did not consult Blau in making his decision. As far as Blau knows, the cancellation of Schwartz's funding has nothing to do with his scientific ability. There has even been some suggestion that an attempt would be made to expel Schwartz from the Graduate School, which would be a great tragedy.
