Letter from Carl Moos to LP, RE: Moos tells LP what he knows about the situation of Tobias Schwartz at Buffalo University. Moos has known Schwartz for three years and believes that Schwartz is a competent and dedicated student who is sincerely concerned about the completion of his Ph.D. program. In Moos's opinion, the reason why Schwartz has not yet received his degree lies primarily in his research problem. Schwartz has had to put in major time and effort to design and construct a special apparatus, and has encountered more than his fair share of technical difficulties. Schwartz is now ready to collect data, and should be able to finish his Ph.D. in about six months. Moos does not think that the apparent slowness of Schwartz's work is due to incompetence on Schwartz's part, or that Schwartz's interests in social and political issues have detracted from his research efforts. Dr. Snell, Schwartz's research supervisor, disagrees strongly with Schwartz's political views, and has shown no inclination to support Schwartz in this matter, despite the fact that Snell regards Schwartz as a good student. Moos is sure that, had HUAC not come to Buffalo, there would have been no questions raised about the support of Schwartz's research. Dear Fred:

I have not told you about the house that we have bought in Santa Barbara, and into which we shall move next year. It is at 794 Hot Springs Road, on a l-acre lot with 30 oak trees and a view of the ocean. It reminds Pasadena house that we built 26 years ago, but it is, of course, smaller.

I am writing to report to you about what has happened with respect to my appointment at UC Santa Barbara. When I talked with you by telephone on Wednesday 27 May I told you that I had just learned from Chancellor Cheadle that he had not sent in to the Regents the papers recommending my appointment at USC, but had only mentioned it informally to President Kerr. I had told Chancellor Cheadle that I would be coming to Santa Barbara the next day, and he asked me to telephone for an appointment for Friday.

At 9 a.m. on Friday 29 May I telephoned Chancellor Cheadle. I said “This is Linus Pauling.”

He said “You want to talk to me about your appointment. This matter is in the hands of the Regents.”

I then said "Have you sent in the papers? You told me two days ago that you had not."

Chancellor Cheadle then said “I haven't sent them in and I am not going to send them in.” This last sentence was spoken very loudly.

I then said "I think then that I shall not care to see you. Goodbye."

The only other actions that I have taken are to talk by telephone with Glen Seaborg and with a friend of mine, Garrett Hardin, who is Professor of Biology at UCSB and has been teaching for a few months in Berkeley.

I shall hope to talk with you further about this matter when you arrive in Santa Barbara and when Ava Helen and I get hack from Europe. I feel that the matter cannot be left in its present unsatisfactory state. I feel that either I am recommended for an appointment by UCSB or I am not recommended for an appointment. If I am recommended for an appointment, then the Regents should act on the recommendation. If the appointment is not made, then I feel that I need to be told the reasons for not making it.

We are leaving for Paris on 17 of June. I am going to give a lecture of science teaching for UNESCO and also make a documentary film about my work, also for UNESCO. Then we are attending the meeting of Nobel Laureates at Lindau, and I am giving some lectures about the Nobel Peace Prize before we return home 8 July.

I enclose your book bill. I am shocked at its magnitude and apologize for not sending it to you annually so you could control it. The number of Penguins published is increasing very much and is now 4 times what it was when you started. You may want to be somewhat selective and look at the monthly list of new publications. Perhaps you should make a deal with Penguins themselves. They are not allowed to sell with US of A in general and might give you the books.

I have included a few books with delayed delivery which I have. I have also rather uncertainly included by Acta Crystallographica subscription for so long as I have had it. I do not remember and do not know whether I should include it and so leave it to you. I notice you paid for Nature for me for one year but not for journals otherwise.

When are you coming to London? Are you staying with me? We shall be very pleased to see you and would love to have you.
