    4 June 1962

    Dear Mr. Reston:

I think that you and your readers have been made the victim of a hoax.

In your column in The New York Times for 27 May 1962 you mention "one hopeful experiment," and say "This is to use atomic energy to raise water temperatures to fantastic heights, where the salt may evaporate. This idea was put forward in the middle Fifties, but, so far as can be ascertained here, it has never been put to a serious test."

Can you tell me how this came to be written?

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:jh

    11 June 1962

    Dear Mr. Reddoch:

I am sorry that my travels have delayed my answering your letter about the paperback edition of Rudolf Virchow’s Disease, Life and Man.

This book, dealing with the great changes in scientific medicine that took place a century ago, is especially interesting now because medicine has been going through another period of great change. The recent history of medicine includes the discovery and manufacture of many powerful drugs and the great increase in knowledge of the molecular structure of the human body in health and disease. The history of medicine discussed by Virchow includes the development of knowledge of the significance of cells and of cellular function, physiology, in relation to disease. Virchow's essays provide a fascinating account of scientific medicine during the nineteenth century.

    Sincerely yours,

    [Linus Pauling]
