    6 July 1962

    Dear Mr. Nierstheimer:

I apologize for having been so slow in answering your letter of 20 April 1962.

I think the idea of nominating Pastor Martin Niemöller for the Nobel Peace Prize is an excellent one. I must point out that it is too late now, and was already too late in April, to nominate him for the Prize for 1962, because the nominations must be made before the 1st of February of each year. However, there is, I think, no harm in nominating him now for the 1963 Prize.

I myself am not able to make nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. The regulations permit me to make nominations for the Nobel Prize for Physics and for the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, but not for the other Prizes. On the other hand, Professor Albert Schweitzer, whom you mention in your letter, could, as a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, make nominations of others for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I believe that it is not considered proper to publicize nominations for the Nobel Prize.

    With best regards, I am

    Sincerely yours,

    [Linus Pauling]

    1 July 1962

    Dear Mr. Grossfeld:

I am sorry that I have been so pressed by work that I have only now got around to answering your letter.

I don't think that what I said can be described as one society calling another society immoral. I simply pointed out in my lecture that nations operate on a principle of national selfishness, including waging war if it Is profitable to themselves, and this I consider immoral.

As to your question about China, I feel that I am not able to predict the future, except that it its sure to be catastrophic unless we achieve disarmament and peace. It is true, as you point out, that we have been having trouble getting Russia to agree to our proposals and Russia has been having trouble getting us to agree to her proposals, and accordingly we might anticipate trouble in getting China to agree, also. Nevertheless it is necessary that we do so.

    Sincerely yours,

    [Linus Pauling]
