    6 July 1962

    Dear Mr. Nierstheimer:

I apologize for having been so slow in answering your letter of 20 April 1962.

I think the idea of nominating Pastor Martin Niemöller for the Nobel Peace Prize is an excellent one. I must point out that it is too late now, and was already too late in April, to nominate him for the Prize for 1962, because the nominations must be made before the 1st of February of each year. However, there is, I think, no harm in nominating him now for the 1963 Prize.

I myself am not able to make nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. The regulations permit me to make nominations for the Nobel Prize for Physics and for the Nobel Prize for Chemistry, but not for the other Prizes. On the other hand, Professor Albert Schweitzer, whom you mention in your letter, could, as a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, make nominations of others for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I believe that it is not considered proper to publicize nominations for the Nobel Prize.

    With best regards, I am

    Sincerely yours,

    [Linus Pauling]
