    4 June 1962

    Dear Mr. Reston:

I think that you and your readers have been made the victim of a hoax.

In your column in The New York Times for 27 May 1962 you mention "one hopeful experiment," and say "This is to use atomic energy to raise water temperatures to fantastic heights, where the salt may evaporate. This idea was put forward in the middle Fifties, but, so far as can be ascertained here, it has never been put to a serious test."

Can you tell me how this came to be written?

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:jh
