Dear Friend,

I am happy to have received your letter of 25 April.

You may know what has been going on during the last few weeks, but I want to tell you my opinion of the events.

First, you know, of course, that atmospheric testing was resumed by the United States on 25 April. There has continued to be strong opposition from the peace groups. There were two demonstrations in New York, and many in other cities. In particular, on 28 April a demonstration was held outside of the White House organized by Women Strike for Peace. The women in this organization asked my wife and me to join them, and on that day we picketed outside of the White House. This action attracted much attention, and probably caused many people, who read newspaper accounts (one of which is enclosed), to learn about the opposition to nuclear testing, who would otherwise have been ignorant.

Then on the afternoon of Sunday 29 April we were invited by the Quakers to join their picket line outside the White House, and during that afternoon, until 4:30, when the demonstration came to an end, I walked in the picket line with the Quakers.

On that evening there was held the great dinner by President Kennedy and Mrs. Kennedy, in the White House - the largest dinner held by any President in recent times. There were 49 Nobel Laureates present, and in addition Dr. Clarence Pickett, representing the American Friends Service Committee.

President Kennedy and Mrs. Kennedy were sympathetic to us, I believe. I have formed the opinion that President Kennedy is in sympathy with my actions, and even wishes that the pressures from the people opposed to the cold war were greater than those from the cold-war advocates.

As we met President Kennedy, he said to me, "Dr, Pauling, how do you do. You've been around the White House a couple of days already, haven't you?" This was a reference to our picketing the White House.

He then introduced me to Mrs. Kennedy, who said, in a pleasant and somewhat jocular manner, "Dr. Pauling, do you think that it is right to walk back and forth out there where Caroline can see you, so that she asks 'What has Daddy done wrong now?'" Caroline is the daughter of the Kennedys, about four years old. I think that this pleasantry by Mrs. Kennedy was in a sense an invitation of sympathy with our actions.

There has been some criticism of me for attending the White House dinner, after I had expressed opposition to the decision by President Kennedy. However, this criticism has been expressed by only a few people. The majority of the newspapers agree that there is nothing wrong in participating in the dinner, despite my opposition to some of President Kennedy's decisions.

I believe, in fact, that the opposition to the atmospheric testing has had an effect. I was afraid that the United States might carry out a great series of atmospheric tests, equaling the 120 megatons of the Soviet series carried out last fall. Now the newspapers are quoting government officials to the effect that the present American tests will amount only to 20 megatons, one sixth as much as the Russian tests, although the Pentagon is trying to get the President to agree to a larger number of tests. It may be that the peace movement is responsible for the decision of the President to keep the tests down to a small fraction of the Soviet testing last fall.

Dear Linus and Anita,

Mama and I have been doing a lot of things, and I have decided that I should write to tell you about them. I may have mentioned some of them to you already.

You know, of course, that we had dinner with President and Mrs. Kennedy and a lot of other people about ten days ago. The President and Mrs. Kennedy joked with us about our having picketed the White House just before coming in to dinner. President Kennedy said "Dr. Pauling - you've been around the White House for a couple of days already, haven't you?", and Mrs. Kennedy said "Dr. Pauling, do you think that it is right for you to walk back and forth out there where Caroline can see you, so that she asks 'What has Daddy done wrong now?'" Also, you may know that Mama and I danced, although dancing was not scheduled. Gerard Piel and his wife had started to dance, as we were walking by the place where the orchestra was playing. Mama thought that it would be proper to help them out - they were the only people dancing - but also to ask Mrs. Kennedy, so she said "Mrs. Kennedy, would it be all right to dance?", and Mrs. Kennedy said "Well, if you want to - you're supposed to be in there listening to the reading by Frederic March, but if you prefer to dance, go ahead." So Mama and I danced a bit, and then went in to listen to the reading.

Then we went to New York, where I put in four days making a deposition, under oath, in connection with the libel suit that I have against Hearst Publishing Company. You probably know that we have filed four libel suits against newspapers, and may file a fifth. Perhaps you have heard that we have won one of them. The suit against the Bellingham Publishing Company has been settled. They have paid us $16,000, of which about $6,000 goes for lawyer's fees and expenses. I hope that these libel suits will force newspapers to be more careful about what they print about me.

I have a cold now, but I hope to be over it in a day or two, and on Monday we are planning to go to the ranch. Mama is rather run down, I think. She got pretty tired during the month (March) when we were traveling all over the country lecturing for the American Friends Service Committee. Nearly everyday they had arranged two talks by her and two by me.

I am just putting the finishing touches on a paper that Peter and I have written jointly - a new theory of antiferromagnetism and ferrimagnetism, which developed during discussions that we had about this subject when Peter was here around the time of my sixtieth birthday.

Mama and I had scheduled several trips to Europe this summer, but we have cancelled all of them but one, or possibly two. There is a meeting of one hundred leading peace workers of the world to be held in Ghana in June, and we may decide to go to it. Then I shall give a talk on anesthesia at the International Physiological Congress in Holland in September, and at the same time Mama will be participating in a women's international meeting in Montreal. I hope to spend much time at the ranch this summer, completing the revision of my College Chemistry, but I need to spend some time in Pasadena, also, because I shall have a group of seven people, mostly undergraduates (two from University of London, the others from C.I.T.) carrying out various exploratory studies about anesthetic agents, in an effort to find a way of checking up on my theory of anesthesia.

On our trip for the American Friends Service Committee several people mentioned seeing you. Most of them were people connected with mental retardation in one way or another - people who were, for example, at Denver. I think one of them said that he had been assigned to the same room as you (Linus).

Have you seen the movie Lover, Come Back? If not, you ought to see it, because to have two people under the name of Linus in the film gives it a special interest. One of them is the greatest chemist in the world, a Nobel Laureate who is a nonconformist and is incorruptible (except that he opens his eyes at the sight of five thousand-dollar bills), and the other is a man who masquerades as him. Both Mama and I found it pretty amusing.

Dear Mr. Wang:

In answer to your letter, I may say that you are right in surmising that I used the constant 0.06 Å in calculating the electronegativity correction for the aluminum-phosphorus bond. The values for the correction discussed on page 229 referred only to the radii given on page 224, but I think it is right to apply it also to similar atoms.

In making the application the value of the factor is determined by the more electropositive atom on the pair. If this more electropositive atom, involved in a bond with an atom not in the first row, is in the same row with silicon, then the factor is 0.06 Å; if in the same row with germanium, it is 0.04 Å, and so on.

Accordingly the factor should be 0.06 Å for aluminum arsenide, rather than 0.04 Å.

I do not have the values of the observed bond lengths for BM (cubic) and BP (cubic). If you could write again, sending me the values, I would tell you how I would discuss them.

Dear Linus and Anita,

My sister Lucile in Estacada (Mrs. Lucile Jenkins) has just given us some biographical material about our family on my mother's side. It starts with mention of my great-great-great-grandfather, John Darling. I am sending it on to you, in-case that you are interested.

1. John Darling was born in 1750 and lived in Duchess County, Mass. He was a Tory, and when the war for independence broke out in 1776 he moved to Bay Quinte of Ontario, Canada. He died in 1848, age 98 years. It is not known how many children he had or the name of his wife.

2. William Darling was born on the homestead at Bay Quinte, Ontario, on 2 March 1800, and died in 1872. He married Jane Duell, born 7 May 1807, died about 1846. Eight children.

3. The eldest child was William Darling, born on the Bay joints homestead on 17 February 1826, died in Tacoma, Washington, in July 1900. He married Maria Mayhee at Cannington, Ontario. Seven children were born.

4. Linus Wilson Darling, was born 20 January 1955 in Beaverton, Ontario, and died 15 April 1910 in Portland, Oregon. His mother Maria had died November 1867 at Suspension Bridge, New York.

5. Lucy Isabella Darling, who married Herman Henry William Pauling, was the second child of the marriage of Linus Wilson Darling and his wife.

Dear Daddy,

Thank you for your letter of the 25th April. I have looked up the paper you mention and the preceeding paper referred to in it. In Phys. Rev. 98 391 (1955) J.B. Goodenough and A.L. Loeb discuss three types of bonding; 1) covalent with 2 electrons, 2) semi-covalent (one electron) and 3) ionic.

They treat 1) tetragonal spinel structures by discussing the possibility of forming four covalent (2 e) bonds arranged toward the corners of a square around the atom of interest and that this uses up all the available bonding orbitals so that the other two bonds perpendicular to the plane of the square must be ionic and so longer, explaining the tetragonal distortion. They treat CuFe₂O₄, ZnMn₂O₄, Mn₃O₄, gamma-Mn₂O₃, CaIn₂O₄, CdIn₂O₄, and In. They also treat Fe₃O₄ which forms an orthorhombic structure by saying that the ordering of Fe²⁺ and Fe³⁺ in tetrahedral locations with tetrahedral covalent bonds resists the tetragonal distortion.

They then give the theory of semicovalent magnetic exchange, which gives the Hund's rule argument, and almost explicitly gives the angle argument. (They use bond lengths instead.) On page 405 they say: "Semicovalent exchange couples cation moments antiferromagnetically. This coupling is strongest when the cation-anion-cation bond is 180°. In the spinel lattice neighboring octahedral cations make a 90° angle with their common anion, and the semicovalent exchange between them is small compared to that between tetrahedral and octahedral cations.

They apply this to 1) NaCl structure for MnO and others. 2) Fe₃O₄ inverse spinel ferromagnetic below 119°K. 3) Mn₃O₄ is Mn²⁺ (Mn₂ ^II) O₄ paramagnetic. 4) CuFe₂O₄.

In the Phys. Rev. 100 564 (1955) J.B. Goodenough considers the three kinds of bond type covalent, one electron and ionic. He applys the one electron bond to the perovskites obtained as a function of Mn⁴⁺ present. He does not use the angle argument, instead he uses elastic strain caused by the variation in bond lengths: covalent shortest; one electron middling; ionic longest.

He has pretty nearly taken the wind out of our sails, though he does not do as complete an angle argument as we do. I think we can still publish but it will require a rewording to take account.

I am working fairly hard, primarily on the house. I also have some lectures and several papers to write, and am designing more or less two apparati.

Dear Mr. Fredrick:

In answer to the question about neutron bombs in your letter, I point out that the tests of nuclear weapons now going on are not tests of neutron bombs. The neutron bomb is a fraud - I suggest that you read the article by William Laurence in a recent Saturday Evening Post.

It is hard to know why President Kennedy decided to carry out a series of nuclear tests. In his speech he stated that the Soviet Union had not gained superiority in nuclear power over the United States through the recent Soviet tests. Probably there was heavy pressure from the military-industrial complex to intensify the cold war.

Adenauer continues to try to get hold of nuclear weapons. On 17 November 1961 he stated publicly that not only should NATO be given nuclear weapons, but they should have the right (he and his associates) to use them without waiting to hear from the President of the United States. You can read about this in The New York Times for that day.

Dear Linus and Anita,

A question has come up about which I should like your advice - perhaps not immediately, but at some time in the not too distant future.

Last year the Chief of the Manuscript Division of The Library of Congress wrote me, asking if I would consider presenting my personal papers to The Library of Congress for addition to the national manuscript collections. I answered that I would make a decision later on, and he replied that he was grateful that I was giving serious consideration to their request that the papers become a part of the resources of the national manuscript collections.

I was reminded of this matter by the receipt of a letter from the American Philosophical Society, asking me to consider depositing the papers in the Library of the American Philosophical Society, if I had not arranged to present them to The Library of Congress or deposit them elsewhere.

I had not thought about the matter, except that I had, I think, assumed that the papers would ultimately come into your possession.

Do you have any special wishes about this matter? Do you think that The Library of Congress is the best place to deposit the papers? Note that on the last page of the statement by The Library of Congress it is said that they would like to have every paper, even those considered intimate or trivial. They would return those that seem to be inappropriate.

My papers are in disorder, and I suppose that I should be getting them into order, perhaps by employing someone who has been trained in this field, perhaps a girl with suitable training, and having her work for some months, perhaps a year or two, to get the papers in order.

The three bound volumes of over 11,000 signatures to the bomb-test petition are without doubt valuable. Mama and I have the signatures of about 750 leading people, scientists and others, from about 40 countries, the initial signers of the Petition Against the Spread of Nuclear Weapons. I think that we may have them bound into another volume. The remaining signatures, approximately 100,000, were turned over to the United Nations.

I hope that it will be possible to stop the proposed explosion in the Van Allen belt, but I am not sure that it can be stopped. I doubt that it will lead to a catastrophe, in the sense of killing people; but it may be a scientific catastrophe.

I did not read the article about Mr. William Ogle. I am not so much worried about his being drunk on beer as drunk with power.
