- Letter from Gerard Piel, Scientific American, to AHP . RE: Piel has made to Freeman essentially the same offer as the one on which Freeman has given Addison-Wesley his option. They didn't know at the time that Freeman had already given the option. Piel presents an alternative situation, in which Scientific American, Inc., buys W.H. Freeman and Co., and outlines the terms of such an offer. He suggests that the Paulings speak to Schaefer before visiting Freeman, because Schaefer has already heard Freeman beginning to be paranoid about the Paulings.
