Wesley Crum, Dean of Instruction, Central Washington College of Education, to LP RE: While attending the Institute for College Chemistry Teachers at the University of Minnesota this summer, Newschwander spoke with Dr. Palmquist of the National Science Foundation. Learned that it might be wise to apply for an Institute for High School Chemistry teachers to be held at Central from July 23 - August 17, 1956. Newschwander was impressed when Lloyd Malm described the philosophy of LP's general chemistry course. Has also heard LP speak to the San Francisco Section of the American Chemical Society. Wonders if LP would be willing to lecture at Central on the non-descriptive portions of his general chemistry course. Describes the details of the position. • Letter from Professor Paul A. Beck, Mining and Metallurgical Engineering Dept., University of Illinois, to LP RE: Since the ASM will be publishing the Symposium lectures in book form, he believes that it would be unwise for LP's manuscript to be identical to one that he was publishing in Metallurgical Reviews. Beadle, Chairman, Division of Biology, Caltech, to Committee of the AAAS on the Theobald Smith Award, American Association for the Advancement of Science, RE: Pleased to support LP's nomination of Dr. Harvey Itano for the Theobald Smith Award. Although Itano did his work in the Division of Chemistry, he was well known in Biology both professionally and personally. Itano demonstrated originality and imagination in his hypothesis to account for the observed variations in proportions of normal and abnormal hemoglobins in persons with sickle cell trait. Many of the biologists at Caltech would like to see Itano return as a permanent member of the faculty. [Memo from LP to Beadle July 18, 1955, Letter from LP to Bass August 19, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (I: Individual Correspondence. (Ibers - Itano)), #181.5]

  • Letter from LP to Martin B. Williams, RE: The Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering offers several Graduate Teaching Assistantships. Describes the details of these positions. The division requires three years of residence to obtain a Ph.D. after a bachelor's degree, but it has turned out that men with master's degrees have also had to spend three years because the Division's emphasis is somewhat different from that of other universities. Very little work in business administration is offered at Caltech. Suggests that Williams attend some other school, such as Purdue or a mid-western state university. [Letter from Williams to LP July 29, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (W: Correspondence, 1953-1959), #444.3]

[Letter from Tietz to LP June 10, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (T: Correspondence, 1936-1955), #410.20]
  • Letter from LP to Richard Wistar, Jr., President, Channing Club, Pomona College, RE: If Wistar's club is a small one and the meeting will be informal, such that LP would not be required to prepare a lecture, then LP is sure that he could accept. Requests more information, such as when they would like to have the talk. The second part of November would work best for LP. [Letters from Wistar, Jr. to LP July 30, 1955, November 25, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1955s.26]

  • Letter from Mr. Mousques, Italy, to LP RE: Attached is a letter and questionnaire from Dr. Umberto Niccolini. Niccolini had mistakenly thought that LP was going to visit Pallanza for the "Live Macromolecules" conference, given by the Instituto Lombardo di Scienze e Lettere. Niccolini had to leave for Naples, so could not meet Dr. and Mrs. Corey. However, Mousques, Niccolini's translator, did meet them. Corey offered to take the questionnaire home to LP, but Mousques thought it would be faster to mail it. • Letter from Professor J.B.S. Haldane, Biometry Dept., University College, London, to LP RE: Thanks LP for the reprint; noticed that he did not refer to Beet's work regarding evidence that sickle cells are relatively immune to malaria. In 1948, Haldane suggested that microcythaemia might protect heterozygotes from malaria. L.S. Penrose generalizes that for many thousands of years, natural selection in man has largely been for resistence to various infections. This has not given us the optimal genotypes for other functions. As infections are abolished, this selection will be relaxed, thus causing new evolutionary trends, some of which may be desirable. • Letter from Dr. Norman Molomut to Dr. George W. Beadle, President, American Association for the Advancement of Science, RE: Shocked by the announcement for the 1955 AAAS meeting (to be held in Atlanta) which stated that Negro colleagues would be required to have separate accommodations. Understands that the AAAS may not wish to engage in a campaign of defiance against local prejudicial regulations. However, it would be an intelligent and legal protest to hold the meetings in a city where discrimination is not required. Considers holding the meetings in Atlanta to be an act to retard science, not to advance it. Wonders how many other members feel the same. Requests that this letter be printed in Science. [Letter from Molomut to LP August 17, 1955, Letter from LP to Molomut August 24, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (M: Correspondence, 1950-1955), #256.6]
  • Letter from Dr. Norman Molomut to LP RE: Disturbed by the reservation form for the December meeting of the AAAS; believes that holding the meetings in a city which insists on discriminatory racial practices is shameful. • Letter from Dr. Alexander Rich, Cavendish Laboratory, Physics Dept. University of Cambridge, to LP RE: Read an article on polyglycine II, a new form of polypeptide, in the August 27th issue of Nature. Rich and Francis Crick developed the idea of using a 3-fold screw axis with polyglycine, thereby forming a series of parallel polypeptides connected by an infinite network of hydrogen bonds normal to the axis. Found that they could build such a model and that it would fit the experimental data. Describes the model in numerical detail. Informed Banford of the results; he plans to visit later this week. Planning to hold the dinner in the Carnival Room of the Capitol Hotel. Requests a speech on the effect of freedom on the development of science. Chairman Strauss of the AEC seems to believe that the U.S. is likely to be surpassed by its rivals abroad in the development of science, yet he draws no connection from this to his treatment of Dr. Oppenheimer. Perhaps LP might do so. [Letter from LP to Foreman September 21, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (F: Correspondence, 1935-1956), #128.20]
  • Letter from Dr. Samuel Soloveichik, Chemistry Dept., Yeshiva University, to LP RE: Encloses his manuscript entitled "Oxidation Stages of Organic Aliphatic Compounds" and requests LP's comments. • Letter from LP to Professor H.C. Longuet-Higgins, Chemical Laboratory, University of Cambridge, RE: Pleased to have received the reprint of Longuet-Higgins' paper on hexaborides, especially the corrections to the paper. LP cannot find his old calculations about the hexaboride crystals. Hoard has written to LP that he has made a refinement of the structure determination of B4C and has shown without doubt that the structure is essentially correct. Has obtained values for the interatomic distances and reduced probably errors. Believes that the essentially empirical interpretation of the interatomic distances is trustworthy. Cites a particular sentence in the paper that he does not understand. Skeptical about calculations showing that there is a strong overlap between the valency orbitals of non-adjacent boron atoms.
