  • Letter from Stanley Schaefer, W.H. Freeman and Company, Publishers, to Rev. Vincent F. Beatty, S.J., Chemistry Dept., Loyola College, RE: More than half agree with all Beatty's criticisms of the second edition of College Chemistry. • Letter from W.H. Freeman, W.H. Freeman and Company, Publishers, to LP RE: Recently sent LP the second half of Olson, Koch, and Pimentel's Introductory Quantitative Chemistry. Requests LP's comments on the manuscript. LP will probably find a number of "frivolous passages," but Freeman mentions that he encouraged the authors to spice up their writing, since many students find analytical chemistry dull. LP's suggested deletion of introductory chemical equilibrium was most reasonable, but unfortunately, at many schools, understanding of chemical equilibrium cannot be assumed by the sophomore level. Koch is eager to see the copy of the solubility discussion product so that he may take advantage of LP's criticism. [Letter from LP to Freeman June 29, 1955, Letter from Freeman to LP July 19, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (W.H. Freeman and Company, 1941-1959), #439.13]

Wonder if gamma rays show up on anything besides film. Wonder if there is a known force that will affect gamma rays. [Letter from LP to Potter July 21, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (P: Correspondence, 1953-1959), #313.3]
  • Letter from David M. Gibson, University of Wisconsin to LP RE: Gibson and Dr. Green were sorry to hear that LP cannot participate in the lecture series at the Enzyme Institute this year. [Filed under LP Science: (John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, 1953-1975), Box #14.015, Folder #15.3]

  • Letter from LP to Bob Potter RE: Since gamma rays are not deflected by magnetic or electric fields, the same principle used in the electron microscope cannot be used in a gamma ray microscope. The index of refraction of material substances for gamma rays is essentially unity for all substances, so lenses cannot be used to focus gamma rays. The only way a gamma ray microscope might be made would be to have a small source of gamma rays, close to the object to be magnified, and a photographic plate far away. If an object absorbed gamma rays strongly enough, it would cast a shadow, which would be enlarged in the ratio of the distance from the source to the plate divided by the distance from the source to the object being photographed. The disadvantage is that gamma rays penetrate matter so strongly that ordinary objects would not cast a significant shadow. • Letter from L.O. Brockway, Chemistry Dept., University of Michigan, to LP RE: The announcement of the 2nd edition of Introduction to Quantum Mechanics was made by the McGraw-Hill college editor and the publication date set for 1957. Replied to the editor's request for suggestions; these comments will reach LP soon. Reviewed the notes of the student who announced the equivalence to free rotation of molecules with even-odd rotational symmetries on the two ends. Finds that the student's results were based upon an unwarranted approximation. Thus, a gradual approach to the free rotation does indeed occur with increasing multiplicity of the rotational symmetry. Thanks LP and AHP for their hospitality to visitors at the recent ACA meeting. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (B: Individual Correspondence. (Brando - Bronk)), #31.11]
  • Letter from LP to A.K.N. Reddy, Lecturer in Chemstry, Central College, Bangalore, India, RE: Pleased to learn that Reddy has been awarded a Government of India Overseas Scholarship and that he will be working toward a Ph.D. at London University. • Letter from LP to Dr. Clyde Williams, Batelle Memorial Institute, RE: LP's former student Fernando L. Carraro has written saying that he would like find work with a branch of the Battelle Memorial Institute in Brazil. • Letter from LP to Dr. George M. Steinberg, Assistant Chief, Medicinal Chemistry Branch, Chemical Corps Medical Laboratories, Army Chemical Center, RE: Believes that a basic group in a protein in close proximity to an acidic group might act either to increase the strength of the acidic group or to decrease it. • Letter from LP to Dr. J.I. Fernandez Alonso, Faculty of Sciences, University of Valencia, RE: LP encloses copy of his Nobel lecture. Alonso should notice in the lecture that LP discusses the question of the criticism of resonance theory, but does not make any direct reference to the Russians. Believes that his argument — that the resonance theory is no more idealistic than ordinary structural theory — is a powerful one. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (A: Correspondence), #12.21]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. M.S. Sundaram, Embassy of India, RE: A young biochemist, Knud Karl Lonberg-Hohn, has spoken to LP about the possibility of working in India. Professor Hugo Theorell

    Medicinska Nobelinstitutet

    Medicinska Avdelningen

    Solnavagen

    Sweden

    Dear Hugo:

Your letter of 20 April, with the manuscript of your communication to Nature, reached Pasadena while I was on an eastern trip, lecturing at Harvard University, and I have put off answering it after my return, until now.

I was pleased to see this paper, and to know that you have found the model that I left you to be useful in your work. I agree with you that it is likely that the α helix is present in cytochrome c.

We have not published an account of our new models anywhere. I have been hoping to include a brief discussion of them in a paper that we have slowly been preparing, dealing with possible configurations of polypeptide chains in collagen.

    With best regards, I am

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:W

  • Letter from LP to W.H. Freeman, W.H. Freeman and Company, Publishers, RE: Does not know much about Parlin, Zwolinsky, or Tanford. Has looked up their papers and formed general opinions about them. Believes that they could prepare a good manuscript, but cannot be sure. Does see a need for a good book for a second year of physical chemistry to be given to graduate students. Not sure about what topics should be covered in this book. Seems that the authors would have to decide which topics should be covered based upon their own interests. Recommends that Freeman and LP look over the manuscript without committing themselves.
