  • Letter from Berenice F. Salaman, Administrative Assistant, Chemistry Dept., Yale University, to LP RE: Dr. Kirkwood will not return from Europe until the middle of August. He will write to LP then regarding the Symposium. [Letter from LP to Kirkwood July 22, 1955, Letter from Kirkwood to LP August 17, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1955s.24]
  • Letter from Dr. D.P. Mellor, School of Chemistry, University of Sydney, to LP RE: Thanks LP for acting as a referee. Mellor was invited to the Chair of Applied Chemistry at the New South Wales University of Technology. Notices that LP's name appears in the program of the Wool Research Conference. Wonders if LP will be coming to Australia. [Letters from LP to Mellor March 31, 1955, August 11, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (M: Individual Correspondence. (Mead - Miller)), #246.7]
  • Letter from Dr. Gary Felsenfeld, Mathematical Institute, Oxford, England, to LP RE: Pleased to hear LP's suggestions concerning the tetrachlorocuprate ion structure. Hopes to spend the next three weeks making some of the studies LP suggested. Will send LP a detailed description of the work when it is completed. Has not received an answer from Dr. Bronk concerning the Rockefeller Institute. Requests that LP write to Bronk on Felsenfeld's behalf. Reference to the work on CuCl is Helmholz and Kruh. Will attempt to answer some of LP's more difficult questions in his next letter. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (F: Individual Correspondence. (Feinburg - Feynman)), #119.3]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Allen Lein, Medical School, Northwestern University, RE: Discusses the details of their work on the binding of alkyl isocyanide by myoglobin. Finds an error in the work on ethyl isocyanide and on n-propyl isocyanide. [Letter from Lein to LP August 17, 1955] [Filed under LP Manuscripts of Articles: 1955a.8]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. B. Mukerji, Central Drug Research Institute, Chattar Manzil Palace, India, RE: Hopes that it will be possible for Dr. M. L. Dhar to come to the Chemical Laboratories at Caltech to carry on research in structural chemistry as applied to the problems of biology and medicine. Suggests that Dhar stay in Pasadena for six months to one year. LP would be glad to give strong support to a Rockefeller Foundation grant application for Dhar. Wonders if they can spare Dhar for a while; wonders if he should institute negotiations with the Rockefeller Foundation. [Letter from Mukerji to LP August 18, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (M: Correspondence, 1950-1955), #256.6]
  • Letter from LP to H. S. Rogers, President, Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, RE: Informs that he is pleased to receive the invitation and honorary degree at the University. [Letter from Rogers to LP July 19, 1955] [Filed under LP Awards: 1955h.6]
  • Letter from LP to Professor Joseph O. Hirschfelder, Chemistry Dept., University of Wisconsin, RE: LP would like to attend the symposium on valency and chemical bonding during June 20-22, 1956, but is unsure whether he will be in the United States next summer. Will plan tentatively to give one of the general talks at the symposium; will give a definite answer later in the year. Suggests that the symposium should have a session regarding molecular structure evidence from electron diffraction and x-ray diffraction. [Letter from Hirschfelder to LP July 18, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (H: Individual Correspondence. (Hicks - Hodgkin)), #159.8]
  • Letter from LP to Professor O.F. Tuttle, College of Mineral Industries, Pennsylvania State University, RE: Tuttle's letter arrived while LP was in India and the letter was not forwarded to him. Sends the isorthoclase specimen under separate cover. Has checked through research books and x-ray photographs without finding anything pertaining to the substance. Can make a more thorough search later on. [Letters from Tuttle to LP February 9, 1955, September 19, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (T: Correspondence, 1936-1955), #410.20]
  • Letter from Mrs. George Steres to LP RE: Mr. and Mrs. Steres have always wanted their son to attend Caltech, but their son does not feel he would be accepted. Describes her son's interest in physics. Mrs. Steres' son received poor grades in the subjects which did not interest him. He cannot decide whether to attend Junior College for two years or go to Sacramento State. Mrs. Steres requests that LP write her son a note of advice or encouragement. Wonders if the family might be able to visit Caltech. [Letter from LP to Steres August 30, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
