  • Letter from Dr. William R. Bergen, Head, Orthopedic Research Laboratory, to Dr. W. Harold Civin, Director of Laboratories, The Queen's Hospital, Hawaii, RE: The blood samples that Civin sent to LP for hemoglobin study were sent along to Bergen, as LP is currently abroad. The delay time resulted in unsatisfactory samples for testing, as they had clotted and partially hemolysed. Tests were run anyway and both samples showed the hemoglobin-C component though it was impossible to determine the other component. Recommends shipping another sample directly to Bergen in Alsever's solution. Dr. Sturgeon will send sample bottles containing necessary solution.   • Letter from Dr. Richard Creese, Pharmacology Dept., School of Medicine, University of California Medical Center, to LP RE: Interested in the deviation from simple exponential kinetics which occurs during the exchange of radioactive tracers in muscle. Has interpreted this deviation in terms of variation in the exchange rates of individual cells. Has found in practice that the experimental plots are similar to curves which have been computed on the assumption on that the logarithms of the rate constants of the individual cells are distributed in a normal manner. Harold Civin, Director of Laboratories, Queen's Hospital, Hawaii, RE: Second blood sample arrived in excellent condition and hemoglobin was prepared. Several paper electrophoresis runs were made, but definite results will not be established until fetal hemoglobin content can be checked. One component runs as hemoglobin-C does, while the other runs somewhere between normal hemoglobin and sickle hemoglobin. Would like to perform careful alkali denaturation studies before identifying second component. Tentative diagnosis of patient would be thalassemia/hemoglobin-C disease, with fetal hemoglobin replacing normal A. Will write soon with further information.
