- Letter from Dr. Park L. Turrill, Chemistry Dept., University of California, Los Angeles, to LP RE: A while ago, Turrill invited LP to speak on October 15 before the meeting of the Physics-Chemistry Section of the Southern California Junior College Association. LP's secretary said at that time that LP's plans for the fall were not definite yet and suggested that Turrill contact LP again later. Invites LP once more. [Letter from LP to Turrill July 22, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (T: Correspondence, 1936-1955), #410.20]
- Letter from Iris Daniel, Secretary to E.T. McBee, Purdue University, to LP RE: Encloses a check for $194 to cover LP's expenses in attending the dedication ceremonies at Purdue in June. On behalf of McBee and the staff, would like to thank LP for his contribution to the program. [Letter from Wulf to Edgell June 14, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1955s.15]
- Letter from LP to Bob Potter RE: Since gamma rays are not deflected by magnetic or electric fields, the same principle used in the electron microscope cannot be used in a gamma ray microscope. The index of refraction of material substances for gamma rays is essentially unity for all substances, so lenses cannot be used to focus gamma rays. The only way a gamma ray microscope might be made would be to have a small source of gamma rays, close to the object to be magnified, and a photographic plate far away. If an object absorbed gamma rays strongly enough, it would cast a shadow, which would be enlarged in the ratio of the distance from the source to the plate divided by the distance from the source to the object being photographed. The disadvantage is that gamma rays penetrate matter so strongly that ordinary objects would not cast a significant shadow. [Letter from Berd and Potter to LP July 8, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (P: Correspondence, 1953-1959), #313.3]
- Letter from LP to Dean D. Louise Sharp, Central Michigan College of Education, RE: Regrets that he has already committed himself to so many other obligations that he cannot prepare an article for Sharp's book on the choice of teaching as a profession. [Letter from Sharp to LP June 18, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
- Letter from LP to Dr. John T. Edsall, Biological Laboratories, Harvard University, RE: Apologizes for delay in responding to request regarding figures in his Solvay Conference paper. Gives Edsall permission to use the figures. Encloses glossy prints of the figures, as well as a print of another drawing by Professor Corey. - Letter from LP to Provost Henning Larsen, Chemistry Dept., University of Illinois, RE: Has decided to come to Urbana during the month of April. Trusts that the lectures can be scheduled so as to permit him to attend the American Philosophical Society meetings on April 19-20 and the National Academy of Sciences meetings on April 23-25. [Letters from Wall to LP June 7, 1955, August 11, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1956s.11]
- Letter from Professor Edward P. Clancy, Physics Dept., Caltech, to LP RE: Pleased to learn that such a large fraction of Caltech Ph.D. recipients from the Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering are now engaged in teaching. Had not meant to imply that the comment in question represented the general attitude of the Division. Had a long talk with Dr. Bacher about the problem of attracting good men into college teaching. The first step seems to be to improve the academic salary scales in science. [Letter from LP to Clancy July 13, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (C: Correspondence, 1921-1957), #74.23]
