  • Letter from LP to Dr. M.S. Sundaram, Embassy of India, RE: Has not talked with Drs. Perry and Lippman since receiving Sundaram's letter and the letter from the New Delhi Director General of Health Services. Perry and Lippman would probably not think it worthwhile for them to be nominated to the Rockefeller Foundation. They would more likely be interested in a WHO assignment. They would not want to abandon their established medical practices in Los Angeles unless there was a good chance that they could settle in India permanently, with positions that would permit them to make a real contribution to the country's welfare. Perry and Lippman might be willing to come at their own expense, if it seems likely that they would receive a permanent position after one or two years. LP will be in Washington on October 11. Requests to meet with Sundaram then. [Letters from Sundaram to LP September 27, 1955, October 7, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Robert A. Spurr, Hughes Aircraft Co., RE: LP returns Spurr's manuscript on proteins, which he read with interest. Professor E. Bright Wilson, Jr.

    Department of Chemistry

    Harvard University

    12 Oxford Street

    Cambridge 38, Massachusetts

    Dear Bright:

I think that I agree completely with the statements in your letter of 26 September. I hope that Martin will go ahead with the revision of the book. Then we can look it over, and see what needs to be done thereafter.

I may say that in particular I agree with you about introducing matrices, though perhaps not matrix mechanics in a general way. Also, I agree that something needs to be done about the section on perturbation theory; Martin and I have talked about this already.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:W

  • Letter from Benjamin Dreyfus, Dreyfus and McTernan, Attorneys at Law, to LP RE: Ever since Attorney-General Brownell announced his intention to place the National Lawyers Guild on his list of subversive organizations, the Guild has sought to bring this unjust procedure to the public's attention. The California Chapters of the Guild would like to hold a large public dinner to serve this purpose. Wonders if LP might be willing to speak at such a function. [Letter from LP to Dreyfus October 21, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (N: Correspondence), #287.22]
  • Letter from Dr. Alexander Hollaender, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, to LP RE: Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Biology Division plans to hold a research conference on the general problem of biocolloids on April 12-14, 1956. • Letter from Professor David P. Shoemaker, MIT, to LP RE: Would indeed wish to see the material LP mentioned. Wonders if he might share the information with the Ethyl Corporation as well. Shoemaker recently returned from Holland; his wife will remain there until her immigration papers are ready. They enjoyed traveling to see relatives and visiting some laboratories, including Caroline MacGillavry's laboratory in Amsterdam. Hopes the note regarding the Leerdam crystal glasses bought with LP and AHP's wedding present money was received. Two copies. October 11  (Washington, D.C.)
  • Itinerary: Office of Naval Research, Washington DC; Dr. Orr E. Reynolds [Filed under LP Travel: Box #1.002, Folder 2.1]
  • Letter from Dael Wolfle, Administrative Secretary, Science, to LP RE: Thanks LP for the review of Gero and Reese's paper "A Chemical Model of Drug Action." The authors have tried to accommodate most of LP's suggestions. However, the authors could not agree to give equilibrium constants calculated on the assumption that one molecule of each of the two interacting substances combine together. The authors claim there is nothing in the experimental data to support this statement. Wolfle wonders if LP accepts this explanation and if the revised paper is worthy of publication. [Reviews by LP August 15, 1955, November 4, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Organizational Correspondence. (Sa - Sc)), #374.6]
  • Letter from Dr. Cornelius H. Siemens, Humboldt State College, to LP RE: Thrilled over LP's acceptance of the invitation to speak at American Heritage Week. LP is scheduled to speak before the General Assembly on February 17 at 11 AM for forty minutes. If LP would like to arrive on the evening of February 16, a reservation will be made for him at the Eureka Inn. Requests a glossy print of LP. Will obtain biographical info from the Directories through 1954, so LP should send any newsworthy info concerning 1955. [Letter from Dougherty to LP November 3, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (N: Correspondence), #287.22]
  • Letter from W.D. McElroy, Director, Johns Hopkins University to LP RE: Invites LP to act as moderator of Session IV at the Symposium on the Chemical Basis of Heredity, which is to be held June 19-22, 1956. LP's primary responsibility would be to keep the less informed group on the right track. LP is welcome to prepare a manuscript for publication, but would not be required to do so. The Institute would defray LP's expenses. Includes a tentative program, as well as a program from last year's symposium. Welcomes LP's suggestions concerning additional participants in the symposium. Requests LP's comments. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (C: Organizational Correspondence. (Ch - Ci)), #70.9]
  • Letter from Professor Kenneth S. Pitzer, Chemistry Dept., University of California, Berkeley, to LP RE: Permits LP to take the day at Humboldt. Only objection to the week starting February 6 is that since that is the first week of classes, the staff will be busier with undergraduates than in later weeks. If it makes little difference to LP, then the later weeks would be better. January 3-13 would be excellent for the other portion of LP's visit. [Letters from LP to Pitzer October 6, 1955, December 2, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1956s.3]

October 13
  • Letter from Mary Alves, Editorial Service Dept., Time, Time and Life Building, to LP RE: Requests additional information regarding the photograph taken of LP and AHP at the American Philosophical Society meeting. • Letter from Dr. A.C. Allison, Cell Metabolism Research Unit, Biochemistry Dept., University of Oxford, to LP RE: Work on the sickle cell transformation, begun in LP's lab and continued at Allison's lab, is now fit for publication. LP has suggested publishing it in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Allison would agree, but worries that the work is too extensive to fit into one published paper. Allison's results with compounds attaching themselves to SH groups, interactions of S and C, etc., support the helical aggregation concept. Orientation of Hb molecules turns out to be important in this concept. Requests clarification of a statement made by LP at the Harvey Lectures on Perutz's work. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (A: Correspondence), #12.21]
  • Letter from Dr. J.T. Braunholtz to LP RE: Enjoyed his year of research at Caltech. Sorry to have missed LP upon departure from Caltech. Preparing to resume work as a Fellow of Trinity College. • Letter from Beatrice Wulf, Secretary to LP, to R. Perkins, Bloomfield Schools, RE: Considering Helen York for a secretarial position at Gates and Crellin. York said that she taught in the Bloomfield Schools from 1948 to 1954 and gave Perkins' name as a reference. The position for which York is applying involves a large amount of clerical work involved with keeping detailed records of 60 graduate students. Would involve working in cooperation with students and faculty, as well as with other offices of the Institute. York has not held a position of this sort, but her teaching, counseling, and library work qualify her for the position. Requests a frank evaluation of York's abilities and personality. • Letter from Dr. Jack Dunitz, National Institute of Mental Health, to LP RE: Encloses the first draft of a paper on the crystal structure of ferrocene. Since most of the work was performed at Caltech, believes that the paper should come as a contribution from Gates and Crellin, although parts were done at Oxford and NIH. Unhappy with the paper; believes that the poor quality results are due to the untrustworthiness of the experimental data. Discusses some of the results. • Letter from Professor Joseph B. Platt, Physics Dept., University of Rochester, to LP RE: Platt and his students have been exploring the possibility of building a large aperture bent mica x-ray spectrograph for the determination of wavelengths of mesonic x-rays. Would not require high resolution, but would require high luminosity. They have read LP's article on the structure of micas and related minerals which appeared in the 1930 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Wonders if the observed and calculated intensities of reflection which LP gives for fuchsite are for the Cu K-alpha wavelength. Wonders what LP used for a Debye temperature of fuchsite. Would appreciate any information regarding what orders of reflection at which wavelengths give high reflection coefficients for mica. Wonders if LP knows of any work that has been done on the mosaic crystal coefficient of reflection for the micas.
