  • Letter from Beatrice Wulf, Secretary to LP, to Dr. Samuel P. Massie, Sixth Annual Conference on the Teaching of Chemistry, American Chemical Society, RE: LP plans to arrive in Nashville on June 14 at 6:55 PM and will leave on June 16 at 8:15 AM for Indianapolis. Would like to know whether a reservation has been made for LP and if so, where he should go upon his arrival. LP will use standard size slides and a blackboard during his lecture. [Letter from Massie to LP May 9, 1955, Letter from Massie to Wulf June 2, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1955s.14]
  • Letter from Dr. A. W. Bell, Life Sciences Dept., Los Angeles City College, to LP RE: Read LP's article on stochastic method and structure of proteins in the American Scientist. Also read Kennedy's article on the tubular structure of collagen fiber in Science. Wonders if the tubular structure as seen under the electron microscope gives any clue to the stereochemistry of proteins. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (B: Correspondence, 1955-1957), #38.1]
  • Letter from Dr. Robert B. Corey, Gates and Crellin Laboratories, Caltech, to Dr. I. Fankuchen, Division of Applied Physics, Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, RE: Thanks Fankuchen for sending Dr. R. Brill's comments on Corey, Marsh, and LP's manuscript, "The Structure of Tussah Silk Fibroin." LP also received these comments in a personal letter from Brill. Corey, Marsh, and LP request to attach footnote to their manuscript. Hopes this will meet with the approval of the referees and editors of Acta. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (B: Individual Correspondence. (Brando - Bronk)), #31.10]
  • Letter from Dr. Robert B. Corey, Gates and Crellin Laboratories, Caltech, to Dr. Richard S. Bear, Biology Dept., MIT, RE: Thanks Bear for the helpful letter suggesting that Bear and his team prepare the drawings and photographs for the collagen structure. Dr. Marsh is having a set of the atomic coordinates of the collagen structure calculated and checked for one complete report, so they will be sent to Bear soon. Expects to leave Pasadena on June 1st for a trip to Europe and shall not return until September. LP plans to be at Caltech during the summer, so Bear can direct his collagen structure correspondence to him. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (B: Correspondence, 1955-1957), #38.1]
  • Letter from Dr. Robert L. Pecsok, Chemistry Dept., University of California, Los Angeles, to LP RE: Encloses the results form for the 1955 High School Chemistry Contest. The first fifteen individual winners, the first two teams, their teachers, and their parents will be the guests of the ACS Section at the June 3 meeting. Has promised the winner a chance to shake LP's hand. [Letter from LP to Pecsok May 31, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (P: Correspondence, 1953-1959), #313.3]
  • Letter from Dr. W.G. Schneider, Division of Pure Chemistry, National Research Council, to LP RE: Thanks LP for reviewing his paper. Read the relevant sections of LP's book. Offers to submit an erratum to the Journal of Chemical Physics, stating that the seeds of many of Schneider's ideas are contained in LP's book. When he originally submitted the paper it contained another section on intramolecular hydrogen bonds, in which he made several references to LP's book, but the referee suggested that this section be omitted because it was too controversial. [Letters from LP to Schneider May 25, 1955, June 3, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
  • Letter from Gary E. Sundberg to LP RE: Sundberg read LP's article on the necessity of preparing youth for scientific careers. Sundberg, who is going into the eighth grade, would like to pursue a scientific career. Interested in astronomy and space travel; has been a good student in arithmetic and science, but not in other subjects. Requests any information LP might give to assist Sundberg in choosing classes in high school. [Letter from LP to Sundberg June 1, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
  • Letter from Henry Allen Moe, John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to LP RE: Thanks LP for his judgments of the Latin American biochemists. [Letter from LP to Moe May 23, 1955] [Filed under LP Science: (John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, 1953-1975), Box #14.015, Folder #15.3]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. G. Stein, The Hebrew University, Israel, RE: Thanks Stein for his letter, which arrived while LP and AHP were in the eastern United States. Thanks Stein for the print of the photograph taken in Jerusalem. LP and AHP had a fine time on their trip around the world. Enjoyed their stay with Stein immensely. [Letter from Stein to LP April 8, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Marion Maclean Davis, Physical Chemistry Section, National Bureau of Statistics, RE: Thanks Davis for the reprint which he sent. Plans to peruse it carefully to see whether it contains something that he should include in his revision of The Nature of the Chemical Bond. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (D: Correspondence, 1936-1959), #98.20]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. R. Brill, Physics Dept., Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, RE: Thanks Brill for his comments on LP, Marsh, and Corey's paper, "The Structure of Tussah Silk Fibroin." The comments address an issue they overlooked and they plan to include a footnote addressing the issue. LP does not agree with Brill's statement that the basic structural component of the structure Brill proposed for silk fibroin is the the antiparallel-chain pleated sheet. Discusses his opinion of the topic. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (B: Individual Correspondence. (Brando - Bronk)), #31.10]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Silvio Ranzi, Istituto Lombardo di Scienze e Lettere, Milano, Italy, RE: Would like to attend the Antonio Baselli Conference on the Macromolecules of Organisms, but is unable to do so. Confident that Professor Corey will represent Caltech in a thoroughly satisfactory way and discuss the work which he and Corey have carried out jointly. [Letter from Corey to Ranzi April 28, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (R: Correspondence, 1955-1959), #341.1]
  • Letter from LP to Herschel Mazer, RE: Apologizes that his absence from Pasadena and the press of work have delayed his response to Mazer's questions. Informs that four years of college are necessary for the B.S. degree. LP graduated from Oregon State College with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. The best degree for a future chemist to strive for is a B.S. in Chemistry. Lists universities near Los Angeles. Suggests that Mazer take mathematics, physics, and a foreign language in high school. [Letter from Mazer to LP May 2, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (M: Correspondence, 1950-1955), #256.6]
  • Letter from LP to James A. Rosoff, RE: Pleased to see the photographs Rosoff took in Hawaii. Sorry to say that Dr. Marsh does not need a computer this year. He has arranged to use SWAC at UCLA, which does the job of thousands of computers. Understands from Crellin that Rosoff has a job lined up for the summer. [Letter from Rosoff to LP April 12, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (R: Correspondence, 1955-1959), #341.1]
