Dear Miss Whelton:
I am pleased to answer the question in your letter of 15 September.
The wave lengths of X-rays were first determined in 1913. Some time earlier, in 1906, a physicist named Barkla studied the X-rays from various X-ray tubes by measuring their absorption in sheets of aluminum and other substances. He decided that the X-rays put out by an X-ray tube were heterogeneous. For some reason that I no longer remember, he described the X-rays with the greatest penetrating power as K rays, those with less penetrating power L rays, and so on.
A decade later these letters were utilized as names for energy levels and then for electron orbits.

The Santa Barbara fire was getting close to LP's house, so he and LP had to get all of their things out. They thought that the house would burn, but fortunately it didn't. LP sends his Nobel Peace Prize lecture and some papers on nuclear weapons control. LP discusses his proposal for nuclear weapons control.
