    18 February 1964

    Dr. Linus Pauling, Jr.

    3909 Round Top Drive

    Honolulu, Hawaii

    Dear Linus:

Thank you for your letter and the clippings. I thought that the newspaper articles were fine — I enjoyed reading them. Mama is still burned up about your statement that she doesn't attempt to compete with me intellectually.

She seems to think that neither you nor I can compete very effectively with her.

We are looking forward to hearing from you as to whether or not you will be able to spend two or three days at the ranch, between late March and the middle of April, and which days would be suitable to you. We should let Ralph Haskin know, and also arrange our plans satisfactorily.

    Thanks for the birthday greetings.

I have just realized that I am scheduled to be in Blacksburg, Virginia on the first and second of April, and that Mama and I would probably have to leave on 31 March. We probably would return on 8 April. I am not sure that Mama knows about this engagement.

Also, the trial in St. Louis is scheduled for March, and the date has not yet been set. I have just written the lawyer about it.

Thanks for arranging the transfer of the anonymous fund. A carbon copy of the letter to the Controller of the Institute has reached me. I am afraid that there will only be about $10,000 left to be transferred.

Mama and I are going to be at the ranch next week, and we are going to talk with another architect from Monterey, and then make a decision as to which one to have plan the house there.

    Love from Daddy.
