    Miss Virginia M. Caldwell

    Assistant Editor

    Annual Review of Physical Chemistry

    231 Grant Avenue

    Palo Alto, California

    Dear Miss Caldwell:

I was just beginning to think about the chapter that I have been scheduled to prepare for Volume 15 of the Annual Review of Physical Chemistry when word reached me that I had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1962.

This requires that I go to Norway in December, and that in the meantime I put in much effort in preparing my Nobel address - to say nothing about answering some 1,000 letters and telegrams.

Your letter has reminded me of my obligation to the Annual Review of Physical Chemistry, I regret that I am forced to tell you that I am not able to meet this obligation.

Will you please inform the editor and members of the editorial committee, expressing to them my regret at this necessity.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:hpg
