    4 November 1963

    Mr. Roger Hayward

    920 Linda Vista

    Pasadena, California

    Dear Roger:

I enclose my check for four hundred thousand dollars to supplement the check for six hundred from the California Institute of Technology.

My lecture in Washington was only partially successful. The projector was one with a big carbon arc, and no filter between it and the slides, (or so I was told by someone who went to the projection room). The result was that the slides began to burn a few seconds after appearing on the screen. I do not know what sort of an impression the auditors got – they might have been paying more attention to the burning of the slides then to what I was saying.

I am grateful to you for your help in preparing for this lecture.

I am going to try and find some way of using the drawings, such that you and I may get a payment that we can split between us. The National Academy of Sciences provided a sum of money that did not equal the traveling expenses to Washington and hotel bill.

    Sincerely,

    Linus Pauling:kpc

    Encl.

    5 November 1963

    Mr. Curtis G. Benjamin

    Chairman of the Board

    McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc.

    McGraw-Hill Building

    330 West 42nd Street

    New York 36, New York

    Dear Curtis:

I was pleased to receive your telegram and your letter about the possibility of my writing an autobiography.

I shall, probably, write an autobiography at some time in the future but I have so many other things that I want to do that it seems unlikely that I could get it done during the next couple of years. A biography is under way, by two people who have been working on it for several months.

I shall be away from Pasadena during much of November, and unavailable (writing my Nobel address). I shall, however, be in Pasadena for several days, before and after the fifteenth. I am not sure that it is worthwhile for Mr. Gutwillig to take time to see me, since I could not work on the biography for a long time in the future.

    With best regards, I am

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:kpc

    13 November 1963

    Dr. James G. Horsfall

    Director

    The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station

    123 Huntington Street

    New Haven Connecticut

    Dear Dr. Horsfall:

I am astonished by your statements in your letter of 29 October to me.

First, I believe that it was quite proper for me, after describing the great progress that has been made recently in the developing powerful methods of studying the nature of living organisms, to state that in my opinion great sums of money should be devoted to this activity, rather than to the relatively non-productive activity of the race for the moon. The statement by me of my opinion on this matter was not personal political propaganda.

Second, I find it surprising that you, a biologist should be opposed to using the powerful methods that have now been developed in a vigorous attack on biological and medical problems. I surmise that your attitude may be the result of ignorance – you may not have had much opportunity to keep up with the astounding developments in this field. I suggest that it would be proper for you, in order that you may do justice to your position as the Director of an Agricultural Experiment Station, to make an effort to become familiar with the recent developments in molecular biology and medicine, which may well, in the course of time, have a large influence on the work of your station.

    Yours truly,

    Linus Pauling:hpg
