    Dr. Ruth A. McLean

    Bldg. No. 200, Research Center

    U.S. Department of Agriculture

    Beltsville, Maryland

    Dear Dr. McLean:

I am sorry that the letter that you left at the desk of the National Academy of Sciences has only now been forwarded to me, and accordingly I have not had an opportunity to see you.

I think that I may say, in answer to your question, that the technique of proton–spin nuclear magnetic resonance has been applied with some success, to the problem of the investigation of bound water in some biological materials. This is a field in which I have not had direct experience, and I would not be able to discuss it with you in any detail.

With best wishes to you for success in your work, I am

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:kpc
