Dear Otto:

Ava Helen and I are having a hard time getting everything done. Tomorrow we are going to our ranch for ten days, in order that I may work in quiet on the preparation of my Nobel address, to be held at 7:00 P.M. on 11 December.

I look forward to visiting your laboratory again, and, if you wish, to giving an address - that is, I mean a scientific talk.

I have some nice slides (2" x 2") about molecular structure in general, and some rather new results about amino-acid sequences in polypeptide chains of hemoglobins of animals of different species, in relation to the theory of evolution. I think that a satisfactory title for my talk might be Molecular Structure, Molecular Disease, and Evolution.

If you feel that I should give this talk also in Trondheim, please include it in the arrangements that you are making for Ava Helen and me. Perhaps I could give it in Stockholm, too, although perhaps the days just before Christmas are not good ones for a scientific talk.

Bertil Svahnstrüm telephoned me to say that it was probable that my Peace Lecture in Stockholm would be held on 19 December, in the Stockholm Cathedral. He said that perhaps the archbishop would participate. I told him, in answer to his question, that I had no objection to having a prayer as part of the meeting.

Ava Helen and I are now thinking of staying in Norway and Sweden until about 2 January, and then returning to Pasadena by way of New York, Washington, and Philadelphia. I do not know that meetings during the period between Christmas and New Year's Day would be properly attended, but if you think that this is a satisfactory time for a meeting to be held, you might take it into account in arranging our schedule. Perhaps we would go to Sweden in the period around 19 December, and then return to Oslo for a week before coming home.

Dear Mom and Pop

Linie will be coming certainly, and thank you for inviting him.

It will probably turn out to be too much trouble, but if some of the others should go to Oslo on their own is the public allowed in to watch the ceremony? I'm trying to consider all possibilities.

What do I need in the way of clothes? I can't remember what I wore in Stockholm. If morning coat is what you are wearing, I suppose relatives will be supposed to be less formal. Anyway, please let me know. I'll probably have to get myself a dark suit in Pasadena before going.

It would be fun to go along with you on SAS, but final decision will have to wait; I may go along to Geneva slightly earlier, and then come along to Oslo on the 9th. I'd like to participate in whatever activities are available to me, so I'll suit my schedule to that.

I am sorry to miss parties going on in California in your honor. Possibly there will be some at the last minute I will be there for - I hope so.
