    New York 28, N.Y.

    Dear Dr. Peller:

I thank you for your letter of 17 April and for the reprint of your 1946 paper.

I have been wondering about the questtions that you discuss in your paper, and I shall study your paper with care. I may say that it seems to me that different genes may affect intelligence in different ways, and that the job of formulating genetic theory will necessarily be a much more complicated one than the treatment given in your paper.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:W

  • Letter from Ernest Eliel to LP, RE: Eliel regrets that he can not sign LP's appeal because he considers it to be unfortunately worded. Eliel does not feel that as a scientist he can put his name on a statement of fact unless he is sure it is a statement of the facts as they are. Eliel wants to assure LP that he does agree with the rest of the statement. 31 May 1957

    Prof. Lindsay Helmholz

    Department of Chemistry

    Washington University

    Saint Louis, Missouri

    Dear Lindsay:

Thank you for your letter, and the clipping from the student paper, which I am glad to have.

It is encouraging that there has been so much public discussion of radiation during the last week or two. I was surprised to see a long article, by an editorial writer, in this morning's Los Angeles Times, in which there was considerable support of the proposal that bomb tests be stopped. I had thought that the Los Angeles Times would never take this stand.

Ava Helen and I were really pleased to be with you. Our only disappointment was in not seeing more of your children.

    With best regards, I am

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling :W

  • Letter from LP to Maxwell Stewart, RE: LP thinks that it is very important to make a pamphlet about the hazards of radiation. LP also thinks that the pamphlet would help to clarify the disagreements about the biological effects of radiation. LP is not able to take on the job of preparing the pamphlet because he is leaving soon for a trip to Europe. LP suggests that Dr. Lapp might be able to collaborate on the pamphlet along with Dr. Schubert.
