    Prof. Lindsay Helmholz

    Department of Chemistry

    Washington University

    Saint Louis, Missouri

    Dear Lindsay:

Thank you for your letter, and the clipping from the student paper, which I am glad to have.

It is encouraging that there has been so much public discussion of radiation during the last week or two. I was surprised to see a long article, by an editorial writer, in this morning's Los Angeles Times, in which there was considerable support of the proposal that bomb tests be stopped. I had thought that the Los Angeles Times would never take this stand.

Ava Helen and I were really pleased to be with you. Our only disappointment was in not seeing more of your children.

    With best regards, I am

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling :W

  • Letter from LP to Maxwell Stewart, RE: LP thinks that it is very important to make a pamphlet about the hazards of radiation. LP also thinks that the pamphlet would help to clarify the disagreements about the biological effects of radiation. LP is not able to take on the job of preparing the pamphlet because he is leaving soon for a trip to Europe. LP suggests that Dr. Lapp might be able to collaborate on the pamphlet along with Dr. Schubert. [Stewart's letter May 32, 1957] [Stewart's reply June 4, 1957] [Filed under LP Peace: (Materials, re: Fallout and Radiation Shelters, and Civil Defense, 1954-1961), Box #7.007, Folder #7.1]

[Filed under LP Safe Contents, Drawer 3 Folder 3.004]
  • Letter from Wilfrid Mann to LP, RE: Mann does not feel that he can sign LP's Appeal nor can he ask his friends and colleagues to do so. Mann does not think that the appeal is sufficient and that it might do more harm than good. Mann believes that by asking for a ban on all nuclear bomb testing as a first step to disarmament that LP's sights are set so high as to insure rejection of the proposal.
