    Dr. Benjamin Linsky

    Air Pollution Control District

World Trade Center, The Ferry Building

    San Francisco 6, California

    Dear Dr. Linsky:

In answer to your letter of 7 November, I may say that I do not have any copy of my remarks which led to the Associated Press story. In fact my statement to a reporter consisted of only one or two sentences. After I had been interviewed on another subject, someone asked me about smog, and I said that medical statistics (I was quoting Professor Hardin Jones of the University of California in Berkeley) show that people who live in cities have five years less life expectancy than those who live in the country, and that I felt that air pollution was in considerable part responsible for this difference in life expectancy of five years, and that smog such as we have in Los Angeles might well be responsible for a decrease in life expenctancy [sic] of the order of magnitude of a few years.

    Sincerely yours,
    [Linus Pauling]
