  • Letter from LP to Dr. M.S. Sundaram, Embassy of India, RE: Has not talked with Drs. Perry and Lippman since receiving Sundaram's letter and the letter from the New Delhi Director General of Health Services. Perry and Lippman would probably not think it worthwhile for them to be nominated to the Rockefeller Foundation. They would more likely be interested in a WHO assignment. They would not want to abandon their established medical practices in Los Angeles unless there was a good chance that they could settle in India permanently, with positions that would permit them to make a real contribution to the country's welfare. Perry and Lippman might be willing to come at their own expense, if it seems likely that they would receive a permanent position after one or two years. LP will be in Washington on October 11. Requests to meet with Sundaram then. [Letters from Sundaram to LP September 27, 1955, October 7, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Robert A. Spurr, Hughes Aircraft Co., RE: LP returns Spurr's manuscript on proteins, which he read with interest. Does not have any suggestions for Spurr regarding a magazine similar to Scientific American. Suggests that Spurr make the article more popular in nature, and submit it to the Saturday Evening Post or Colliers. Points out that it is customary to say that viruses consist of protein and nucleic acid. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Individual Correspondence. (Sosman - Steinhardt)), #367.9]

Consolazio, Program Director for Molecular Biology, National Science Foundation RE: Encloses his recommendation of the proposal by Herbert Jehle on specific intermolecular forces. Professor E. Bright Wilson, Jr.

    Department of Chemistry

    Harvard University

    12 Oxford Street

    Cambridge 38, Massachusetts

    Dear Bright:

I think that I agree completely with the statements in your letter of 26 September. I hope that Martin will go ahead with the revision of the book. Then we can look it over, and see what needs to be done thereafter.

I may say that in particular I agree with you about introducing matrices, though perhaps not matrix mechanics in a general way. Also, I agree that something needs to be done about the section on perturbation theory; Martin and I have talked about this already.

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:W

    cc: Dr. Karplus
