  • Letter from Bethsabe Pedersen, News of Science, to LP RE: Thanks LP for his excellent account of Hugo Theorell's work. The article will appear in the December 23rd issue. Confirmed that the Nobel Prizes are always given on December 10th, the date of Nobel's death. The December 16th date was an error that appeared in a New York Times report. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Organizational Correspondence. (Sa - Sc)), #374.6]
  • Letter from Dr. Allen Lein, Medical School, Northwestern University, to LP RE: Points out one small error in their manuscript. Requests 50 reprints. Thanks LP for his comments on Lein's hypothesis that diabetes is a molecular disease. Hopes to explore that possibility in a few months. • Letter from Dr. Joseph Wortis, Director, Division of Pediatric Psychiatry, The Jewish Hospital of Brooklyn, to LP RE: Gives two references of articles that LP might be interested in. Will inform LP if he runs across anything of special interest. Enjoyed meeting with LP. Feels confident that LP is on the trail of a major contribution. Will send LP some of his own publications soon. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (W: Correspondence, 1953-1959), #444.3]
  • Letter from Dr. Melvin J. Astle, Organic Chemistry Dept., Case Institute of Technology, to LP RE: Case Chemistry Dept. plans to revise their undergraduate curriculum. Astle's responsibility is to solicit advice from other schools. Lists concerns and requests LP's comments. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (A: Correspondence 1931, 1936-1957), #12.21]
  • Letter from LP to B. Kameswara Sarma, Head, Chemistry Dept., W.G.B. College, RE: In general, foreign students benefit more by coming to Caltech as post-doctoral workers than as graduate students. Suggests that Sarma complete his graduate work in India, and then come to Caltech. Some graduate assistantships are available, but competition for them is keen. The theory of liquid state is not being studied at Caltech. Suggests that Sarma try to obtain a position with Professor John G. Kirkwood of Yale University, as he is the leading authority in this field. [Letter from Sarma to LP October 26, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Donald M. Russ, Director of Blood Bank, University of Illinois, College of Medicine, RE: Regrets the long delay in answering Russ' letter. Has made some studies of oxypolygelatin. Obtained a supply of it from Don Baxter, Inc. Gives the address and suggests that Russ write to them. [Letter from Russ to LP June 10, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (R: Correspondence, 1955-1959), #341.1]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Friedrich Helfferich, Max Planck Institute for Physical Chemistry, Germany, RE: Approves of all the changes. Has returned all the proofs of the book. Looking forward to receiving a copy within a few months. Appreciates the fine work that Helfferich has done in the translation and revision of the German edition. [Letter from LP to Helfferich November 4, 1955] [Filed under LP Books: (General Chemistry: An Introduction to Descriptive Chemistry and Modern Chemical Theory, Second Edition), #1953b.2]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Garett Hardin, Associate Professor of Biology, University of California, Santa Barbara College, RE: Will not be able to give a lecture at UC Santa Barbara in January or February due to the combination of UC's vacation schedule and LP's own prior commitments. LP plans to make an eastern trip in April. Suggests a date around May 20, 1956 for the lecture. [Letters from Hardin to LP November 1, 1955, December 13, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (H: Correspondence, 1950-1955), #166.6]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Harlow Shapley, Harvard College Observatory, RE: Thanks Shapley for passing LP's letter along to Dr. MacInnes. LP had forgotten about MacInnes' connection with the organization. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (Shapley, Harlow, 1946-1958), #362.1]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. John E. Tyler, Associate Research Physicist, Visibility Laboratory, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, RE: Does not have good enough information about red-absorption dyes to answer Tyler's question. Will pass Tyler's letter onto other people in the lab to see if anyone else has a suggestion. [Letter from Tyler to LP December 2, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (T: Correspondence, 1936-1955), #410.20]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. L.J. Rather, Stanford University School of Medicine, RE: LP does not underestimate the importance of words; agrees with Lavoisier about this matter. However, does think it is dangerous to become too concerned about words, especially as used by thinkers in the early intellectual history of the world. Many facts and ideas have been discovered since the time of the early philosophers, and these change the nature of the world greatly. [Letter from Rather to LP November 29, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (R: Correspondence, 1955-1959), #341.1]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Otto K. Behrens, The Lilly Research Laboratories, Eli Lilly and Company, RE: Would be interested in having some glucagon to use in their own efforts to make the large crystals, along with other substances that would aid in the x-ray determination of the structure. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (E: Organizational Correspondence. (Ea - Ex)), #111.4]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. Zigmond M. Lebensohn, American Psychiatric Association, RE: Accepts invitation to participate in the APA symposium on "Recent Progress in Genetics and Its Implications for Psychiatric Theory." Returns the tentative program. Satisfied to have the title remain as suggested. Will send abstract of his talk to Dr. Titus Harris before the end of January. Has not made definite plans about his stay in Chicago, but will probably be there on Wednesday evening, so accepts invitation to annual dinner. Wonders if AHP can come too. [Letters from Lebensohn to LP November 28, 1955, December 8, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1956s.21]
  • Letter from LP to Gerard Piel, Publisher, Scientific American, RE: Professor Corey and LP are "really annoyed" by the action of Naturwissenschaftliche Rundschau in publishing their article, and especially in removing Roger Hayward's name. Suggests filing a complaint. [Letters from Piel to LP November 1, 1955, December 29, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Organizational Correspondence. (Sa - Sc)), #374.9]

  • Letter from LP to Professor Alfred C. Ingersoll, Dept. of Civil Engineering, Caltech, RE: Thanks Ingersoll for the copy of the letter which he sent to Senator Hennings. Hopes that Hennings is willing to include it in the testimony. Glad to have Ingersoll back on campus. [Letter from Ingersoll to Hennings November 23, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (I: Correspondence, 1936-1973), #185.16]
  • Letter from LP to Prudence Thrift RE: Requests that Thrift formulate a note for LP and AHP, with respect to the money that they have lent Pearl M. Jordan and her daughter, Peggy Jean Holland. Jordan has asked that the wording of the deed be changed from "Joint Tenancy" to "Tenancy in Common." Would like the note and deed to be made out in such a way that in case of the death of LP or AHP, the payments would be made to the survivor. Gives details regarding payments and interest. Encloses several documents. Requests that Thrift let LP know if she needs any more documents. Requests that Thrift look over the promissory note signed by LP's sister, Pauline D. Ney. If the note is in the proper form, Thrift should return it to LP and he will send the money to her. Thrift should also send the bill for her services about these matters. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (T: Correspondence, 1936-1955), #410.20]
  • Letter from Professor Bruce A. Benson, Physics Dept., Amherst College, to LP RE: Thurgood Marshall, Chief Counsel of the NAACP, is scheduled to speak at Amherst on April 25. Would like to avoid a conflict between Marshall's lecture and LP's lecture. Wonders if April 26 or 27 would be acceptable for LP's lecture. • Letter from Professor Otto M. Smith, Research Foundation, Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, to LP RE: Much has been said about the financial and professional rewards for research professors as compared to those for teaching professors. Asks specific questions about policies that Caltech has for rewarding professors for outstanding accomplishments as teachers. Wonders if teaching professors receive salaries equal to those of research professors. Wonders if teachers are employed during the summer. Wonders if teachers have opportunities for advancement comparable to those for researchers. Wonders if a "distinguished professor" title is bestowed for excellent teaching. Wonders if the caliber of the staff teaching lower division classes is equivalent to that of the staff teaching upper division classes. This letter has been sent out to many institutions. [Letter from LP to Smith December 19, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Correspondence, 1953-1956), #379.3]
