  • Letter from Dr. Alan G. Newcombe to LP, RE: Newcombe and his wife have had the pleasure of seeing LP ten years ago at the Chemical Institute of Canada meeting in Hamilton.  They have organized a small discussion group to try and find a solution to the currents problems with disarmament and international affairs, which has come up with a solution that they send to LP.  This was rejected by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists and rejected by them, and “read with interest” by the Minister of External Affairs.  They hope that LP can give some feedback on it, and mention it in his speeches.   • Letter from G. Wilkinson to LP, RE: Wilkinson thanks LP for his letter of February 28th. The main point of Wilkinson's review of LP's book was that to omit much of molecular-orbital and ligand-field theories while concentrating almost exclusively on valence bond theory is rather misleading from the instructional point of view. In response to LP's requests for good examples of these other theories, Wilkinson refers LP to several books and articles. Wilkinson thinks that these examples give interesting results without any high-brow mathematics and are quite understandable by students.   • Letter from LP to G.K. Wertheim, RE: LP was interested to read Wertheim's paper in the Physical Review on the Mössbauer effect in ferrous fluoride. In recent research with his son, Peter, LP has made a conclusion about uncompensated s electron spin in ferrous fluoride structure. LP wonders if Wertheim thinks that this uncompensated s electron spin could produce the shift in frequency that Wertheim observes.
