    4 March 1961

    Dear Harold:

Thanks for your letter. My trip to New York was not thoroughly successful. I kept hoping to hear from you up to the last minute. Then on 15 February I had to decide whether to go ahead with the plan to come to New York on the 10th, despite the Congo trouble, or to change the plan. I decided to go ahead. On arriving in New York I telephoned the news agencies, and got some response - about 15 people at the press conference. However, The New York Times carried only a 5-inch article - the Post was better.

I enclose a copy of the petition. You will be interested to see the list of initial signers, on the back. I gave out this list at the press conference.

My wife and I are now collecting further signatures.

    Sincerely yours,

    [Linus Pauling]
