- Letter from LP to Barclay Kamb, RE: Updates him on their travels for the past week. They went to Seattle to deal with a libel suit, and to San Francisco to give a talk arranged by the American Friends Committee on Legislation, and then to Cleveland, where they attended the meeting by the American Humanist Association. There he was given a plaque stating that he is the “Humanist of the Year, 1961". Then to Toronto, where they spoke at a meeting arranged by the Toronto Committee for Disarmament. Tonight they will have dinner with Otto Bastiansen, and then in a couple days they will go to the ranch. He and Peter have come up with a new idea about antiferromagnetism. He has also read some of Barclay’s work, and thinks that he should write a book. Linda has probably told him that they will be moving out of their house soon, and hope to have the ranch completed. - Letter from LP to G. Wilkinson, RE: LP thanks Wilkinson for the references, but doesn't think that Wilkinson has answered LP's main question from his letter of March 15th. LP did not ask for references to the whole molecular-orbital method and ligand-field theory, but rather that Wilkinson provide one case in which he discusses some important structural problem by each of these methods. At Wilkinson's suggestion, LP has reread Moffit's article of 1954 on dicyclopentadienyl compounds. LP finds the article interesting, but says that no chemist could possibly understand it without unusual mathematical background and experience, and that in spite of Moffit's complex mathematics, Moffit himself admitted that he could not come to an absolute conclusion in regards to the nature of titanium biscyclopentadienyl. LP still hopes that Wilkinson can offer a non-mathematical discussion in which either the molecular-orbital method or the ligand-field treatment is given of some structural problem, so that LP can include it in the next edition of his book.
