  • Letter from Dennis Flanagan, Editor, Scientific American, to LP RE: Thanks LP for his comments on the article by Henry Menard. LP's letter stimulates them to be more vigilant about editing. Gerard Piel says he spent a pleasant time with LP. [Letter from LP to Flanagan June 29, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (S: Organizational Correspondence. (Sa - Sc)), #374.9]
  • Letter from Edward Engson to LP RE: Congratulates LP on receiving the Nobel Prize. Engson is researching grapho-analysis. Requests that LP send a few lines of his handwriting. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (E: Correspondence), #112.21]
  • Letter from Fernando L. Carraro to LP RE: Invites LP to visit Brazil. Regrets having to leave Caltech. Hopes that he did not cause too much trouble, particularly while he was sick. Requests forgiveness for the silly telegram which he now wishes had never reached LP. Spent a month at the seashores and another month in the mountains. Now works at the Technological Institute of Rio Grande, in charge of a powder x-ray unit. Might be possible to adapt a Weissenberg camera to the unit and continue the structural determination work of CsClBrI started at Caltech. Has no definitive plans for the future. Has written to Battelle Memorial Institute, which plans to establish a research laboratory in Brazil. Has given LP's name as a reference. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (C: Correspondence, 1921-1957), #74.23]
  • Letter from LP to Adella M. Langill, Administrative Assistant, American Friends Service Committee, RE: LP did not prepare a manuscript of the speech which he delivered at the dinner given in his honor in Los Angeles on June 4. Accordingly, cannot send a copy of it to Langill. [Letter from Langill to LP July 7, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (L: Correspondence, 1955-1960), #231.1]
  • Letter from LP to Dr. F.H. Thurber, Southern Utilization Research Branch, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, RE: Congratulates Thurber on receiving a Superior Service Award from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. Hopes that Thurber and his wife will visit Pasadena sometime. [Memo from the Southern Utilization Research Branch to Unknown June 10, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (T: Correspondence, 1936-1955), #410.20]
  • Letter from LP to Hugh Wilson RE: Does not see how Wilson's theory that the universe is filled with unitrons could be subjugated to any experimental test. Suggests that it would be necessary to work out some quantitative consequences of his theory before any test could be made. [Letter from Wilson to LP July 10, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (W: Correspondence, 1953-1959), #444.3]
  • Letter from LP to James M. Crowe, Executive Editor, Chemical and Engineering News, RE: Thanks Crowe for copies of the front cover and the original photograph showing LP's family. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (C: Organizational Correspondence. (Ch - Ci)), #70.3]
  • Letter from LP to Jean Sanford, W.H. Freeman and Company, RE: Wonders whether Dr. Allen's letter meant what Sanford said it did. Sure that Allen would know that the answer sheets for the new edition of College Chemistry are not available yet. Allen was probably referring to answer sheets for the first edition, and perhaps also for General Chemistry. Will prepare the answer sheet for the second edition in the near future. [Filed under LP Books: (College Chemistry: An Introductory Textbook of General Chemistry, Second Edition), #1955b.2]
  • Letter from LP to Professor E.C. Kemble, Department of Physics, Harvard University, RE: Received the paper entitled "Specific Forces between Macro-molecules" by Professor Herbert Jehle. LP returns the manuscript to Kemble and sends a copy of this letter to Mary D. Alexander. Interested in the work that Jehle has been doing. Due to the high fee charged to non-members for publications over three pages in the Proceedings, LP suggests that Jehle look for some other place in which to publish the manuscript. In any case, the decision is not up to LP, for he resigned as chairman of the Editorial Board; Wendell Stanley has accepted the job. [Letter from Alexander to LP July 11, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (K: Correspondence, 1936-1956), #200.20]
  • Letter from Mr. and Mrs. Yasusaburo Hara, Tokyo, to LP and AHP RE: Pleased that the dolls reached LP and AHP in good condition after their long journey. Will send LP and AHP's greetings to Professor Umezawa. Hope to see them again in California. [Letter from Hara to LP and AHP May 31, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (H: Correspondence, 1950-1955), #166.6]
  • Letter from P. Morrison to LP RE: Guy Shipler, Royal France, and Morrison have organized a Hiroshima Commemorative meeting. Wonders if LP might be able to speak at the meeting, which will probably be held at Carnegie Hall on August 6. [Telegram from LP to Dailey July 19, 1955] [Filed under LP Correspondence: (D: Correspondence, 1936-1959), #98.20]
  • Letter from Professor Paul A. Beck, Mining and Metallurgical Engineering Dept., University of Illinois, to LP RE: Plans nearly complete for the 1955 ASM Symposium in Philadelphia. Lectures will be limited to 40 minutes to leave time for discussion. Evening lectures may be longer, but should still represent a brief, popularized abstract of the written contribution. No length limitation for the written contribution. [Letter from Beck to LP July 11, 1955, Letter from LP to Beck July 22, 1955] [Filed under LP Speeches: 1955s.22]
