  Dear Peter:

  I have decided that I now have enough books to keep me busy for a long time, and that you should stop sending most of the Penguins to me. I suggest that you ask that detectives and crime stories be continued, also science fiction, and also puzzles, especially cross-word puzzles. I have a feeling that these categories will be enough.

  I may say that modern fiction would be interesting to me, also, but I do not think that the reprints of old fiction should be sent any longer.

  Mamma and I spent four days in La Jolla last week. I gave the Physics seminar there, and had a good time talking with Maria Mayer and other nuclear people, as well as with the solid state physicists, especially Bernd Matthias. He has been studying properties of many alloys and other compounds, including, I think, the anhydrous cobalt sulphates. I suggest that you send reprints of your papers on the cobalt sulphates to him.

  Dear Peter:

  I thought that I should write to you, in case that you heard from someone that I had broken my leg, to let you know that it is not a bad break. I have been spending most of my time in bed during the last two weeks, because I have a cast extending from my right foot to above the knee. I was along the hillside, not far from the house in Salmon Creek, when I slipped on some dry grass, I think, and fell in such a way that I put my weight on my lower leg, and broke the tibia - a break extending longitudinally for about five inches. Fortunately, there was no displacement of the bone.

  Tomorrow I hope to have the cast extending above my knee removed, and a short cast put on, with a rocker, so that I can get around more easily and be more comfortable.*

  I have written another paper on the structure of nuclei, dealing especially with the number of excess neutrons in stable nuclei. It is to be published in the Rumanian Journal of Physics, in a Festschrift. I am thinking about another paper on the same general subject, or perhaps on the magnitude of the discontinuities in energy associated with the magic numbers. Also, I have been trying to develop a simple theory of melting of monatomic substances, such as the metals and the noble gases.

  I look forward to learning more about the cholinergic substances that you mentioned in your last letter. I hope that you are getting something ready for publication, so that I can read an account of this work in the course of time.

  Dear Gus:

  I look forward to seeing you and to learning about the progress of your work with the model. Thanks for sending me the model of the twelve tetrahedra.

  I had thought that probably a 110-volt hot plate would be all that would be needed, but it may be that 220 volts should be installed, for a possible electric stove. Your ideas about the chain pull and the flood lights seem to me to be good.

  I have been working on the fundamental particles recently, including the quark theory. There is one point that has bothered me, and I think that it would be worthwhile for you to check up on it, if you can do so without too much trouble. Perhaps you could ask Tom Lauritsen, or talk with someone that he recommends. The point is this. In the SU3 treatment there are three quarks occupying three orbitals, which are sometimes described as resembling p orbitals, The p orbital has negative parity. However, the octet and decuplet sets of baryons are described as having positive parity. I would expect negative parity for three quarks in orbitals l = 1.

  Please let me know what answer you get about this question, perhaps with a reference. I may say that I have been working on a system that gives positive parity for all of these particles.

  Also, can you tell me what the best, most complete, and most recent set of tables about properties of the various particles is to be found? Perhaps, if you run down a good one, you could make Xerox copies and send them to me at the ranch.

  Also, please telephone me at the ranch, so that we can arrange about your coming up for a while, perhaps with Jenny and Lillian.

  I did not get in touch with you before going to La Jolla, because I decided that the audience would be such a sophisticated one that it would not be proper for me to use models. I thought that my talk went over well. Maria Mayer said that she liked my ideas.

  Here is a job that I should like you to do sometime during the next few weeks.

  There has been some discussion recently about the possibility of a moderately stable very heavy nucleus, with neutron number 184 and proton number 126, This structure would be doubly magic, as is lead 208, with 126 neutrons and 82 protons. I think that the most stable nucleus with 184 neutrons would have only 110 protons, or possibly 112.

  I have a reference to W. D. Myers and W. J. Swiatecki, UCRL-11980 (1965). Would you get me a copy of this, or a Xerox copy. If it is a long paper, perhaps the part relating to this nucleus would be all that I would have to have.

  Moreover, I would like you to check any references that you run across about the next magic number after 126, and give me whatever information you find about predictions that other people have made.
