  Your letter of 17 October, with your paper on the olfactory origin of human behavior, arrived just after my wife and I had left on a trip to Canada, England, and France, from which we have just returned.

  I have read the paper with interest. I am pretty sure that some of the statements you make are not true, at the present time - for example, your statement that the olfactory nerve cells are the only sensory cells in the human body that conduct electrical impulses measurably. This does not mean that the general argument that you present is not justified.

  I hope to look into the matter somewhat further, and to get to the point where I can discuss your ideas more satisfactorily than now.

  Dear Mr. Levine:

  I have received your letter, in which you ask my opinion of the value of LSD.

  Over the past twelve years I have been working on the problem of the molecular basis of mental disease, with the support of grants from The Ford Foundation and The National Institutes of Health. My associates and I have not included LSD in our studies, but I have had some opportunity to get information about its use in the treatment of mental illness, and also its use by persons who are not considered to be mentally ill, but use it as an expander of consciousness.

  It is my opinion that LSD may have some value as a drug in connection with the treatment of mental illness. I do not know how valuable it will turn out to be, and there is the possibility that its use in this relation will be abandoned.

  The use of LSD by people who are not mentally ill is, in my opinion, undesirable. I have had the opportunity to observe persons who have used LSD and other consciousness expanders. The opinion that I have formed is that the use of these substances does damage to these persons. I have noticed especially that these persons become unreliable and untrustworthy, and unable to hold positions of responsibility. I doubt that a person who uses LSD over a period of time would succeed in carrying out good scientific work.

  There may be some reliable published papers in this field. If I run across any, I shall let you know.

  Dear Dr. Robin:

  I am pleased to have received your letter of 11 October, which has awaited my return from a trip to Europe.

  I have continued to think about the mystery band of olefins, and have reached the conclusion that your assignment may well be the best one.

  I would be interested to know whether you agree that your assignment corresponds to the following description from the valent-bond point of view. Let us remove one of the four bonding electrons from the carbon-carbon double bond. This bond would then be described as a single bond plus a one-electron bond. If we add the removed electron to the carbon-hydrogen bond, it becomes a three-electron bond. Since both the three-electron bond and the one-electron bond have about half as much bonding energy as an electron-pair bond, there is a loss in bond energy approximately equal to a single bond, that is, approximately 80 kcal/mole. This value should be increased somewhat by the strain energy corresponding to the vertical excitation.

  The three-electron bond would, of course, resonate among the alternative positions. Also, this three-electron bond could replace the single bond to a carbon atom, rather than a hydrogen atom.

  In general, excited states of molecules are more easily discussed from the molecular-orbital point of view than the valence-bond point of view, but the use of the valence-bond point of view may be of some value, in providing additional insight. I shall be interested to learn what you think about this suggestion.

  Dear Linus:

  We were very pleased to receive the two pictures of you with your beard. Everyone who visits us comments on how handsome you are.

  I am having trouble arranging our schedule for the trip to India, but I hope to get it done today, and to add a postscript. We probably shall come about 1 January, perhaps even the day before, if this is not Inconvenient for you. We are scheduled to leave Honolulu at 1:15 PM on 5 January.

  I am trying to find some interesting spots for us to stop in for a couple of days, on the way to India (in addition to Honolulu), in which case we might leave Honolulu a day earlier.

  I do not think that there is any need to arrange any lectures for me in Honolulu. I shall be giving enough during the stay in India.

  I am glad to learn about the two patients that you have had on nicotinic acid. Perhaps it would be worthwhile for you to try changing to nicotinamide, to see whether the results are the same. Dr. Hoeffer seems to use the two substances without much reason for choice between them. I think that nicotinamide does not cause much flushing. Dr. Hoeffer has just written me that a number of hospitals are checking up on these substances. He said in his letter that he has had good results with most of the 1500 patients that have been treated in this way.

  Please let me know if there is any period around the end of the year when it would be inconvenient to you for us to stop over.

  Dear Peter:

  Thanks for sending me the tear sheets from Scientific Research. I don't know why your letter, mailed on 31 October to UNESCO, was not delivered to me. It was sent on to our hotel, apparently a week later, and then turned over to the American Embassy, which mailed it to Santa Barbara.

  I am interested to see this mention of rotation. I have, by the way, gone ahead with the publication of my paper, even though the theoretical physicists might feel that it is old stuff. I have been trying to carry the argument one step further, in order to get a better understanding of the proton and the neutron. The trouble that I am having now is connected with the question of the motion around the center of mass, in a complex of three particles with equal masses. I wish that the physicists would forget about group theory and write their papers in a more easily understandable way.

  Mamma and I are about ready to go to Portland and Seattle and Spokane, on a trip that will last one week. Then we have a rest for a month, before we set off for India. Yesterday we had our Thanksgiving dinner with our friends the Struthers. It is the first time for many years that Mamma has not had the job of making Thanksgiving dinner.

  Mamma left a message for you, when we were in London and tried to reach you by telephone. We thought that we would be at the London airport for one hour, but because of some plane trouble we were there for three hours, and two hours late in arriving In Los Angeles.

  It was fine to see you, and we look forward already to our next visit. I committed myself to spending three weeks in France next September, so we should be able to see you then.
