  Dear Des:

  I hope that you have seen my papers on the structure of atomic nuclei. I am sending you five reprints, under separate cover. I now have much more ready to publish, but I have been too busy to get the papers into final shape. I look forward to learning your opinion of the work.

  I want to tell you about an action that I have taken with respect to the Joliot-Curie Medal. First, I have never received a direct communication from the awarding body, but only some messages of congratulation from other groups and individuals.

  You probably will hear that I refused to accept the Medal. The circumstances locally are such that I felt that I could not do so. Some announcements were made locally that the Medal was being awarded to Mrs. Mary Clarke end me, and I was told that a meeting was being arranged at which the Medal would be presented to Ms. Clarke and me.

  I cannot accept this sort of misrepresentation of my work for world peace. I have had only one close collaborator in my work for peace: my wife, Ava Helen Pauling. She and I jointly arranged the Oslo Conference against the spread of nuclear weapons in 1961 as well as the petition against the spread of nuclear weapons, the same year, which was signed by about 200,000 people and presented to the United Nations. We have spoken together in peace meetings in many countries; for example, three lecture tours through Germany, two long tours, one month each, through Australia and New Zealand, and so on. She and I were joint recipients of the Janice Holland Peace award of Women Strike For Peace and of the United Nations Association Award. In my address of acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize I laid special emphasis on my collaboration with her. I have, of course, received some peace awards alone; I cannot, however, accept a peace award under conditions suggesting or emphasizing close collaboration in my peace work with Mary Clarke, rather than my wife.

  We are planning to come to Europe in the fall, probably for the month of October and the first few days of November. Our schedule is not yet arranged, but I hope that we can see you in London.
