  Mamma and I are looking forward to seeing you - if not before then, in January or February, we hope.

  We are scheduled to go to India in January, arriving in Madras on 8 January, I believe. There is the possibility that we would go a couple of days earlier, to see some friends in Calcutta on the way to Madras. At any rate, we could stop in Honolulu on the way, in January, or on the way back, about 15 February.

  Are you going to be at home at either or both of these times?

  Mamma has talked with Linda about the cruise on the Mediterranean, and we received a letter also from Peter, mailed from Greece. We hope that you had a very good time, and also enjoyed going on around the world.

  My leg is getting along well. I am still using the crutches (usually just one crutch), and next week I shall go in to San Luis Obispo to see the doctor, and find out whether he thinks that I can give up the crutches, probably using a cane for a while. I can stand on my right leg now, but I think that the extra use that I have been putting it to during the last week, when I have used one crutch, has made it sore.

  Do you have any information about the use of nicotinic acid or nicotinamide in the treatment of schizophrenia? I have formulated a rather general idea on which this has a bearing. It is that those vital substances that are manufactured in considerable quantities by many animals but for which human beings have lost the power of manufacture (so that they have become vitamins or essential amino acids or other essential substances obtained in foods) may be of benefit when provided in considerably larger quantities than minimal amounts required to prevent a decline in health. Ascorbic acid is an example. The mutation leading to the loss of the ability to manufacture it seems to have occurred rather recently, perhaps around ten million years ago, as Indicated by the fact that human beings, gorillas, and other primates do not have this power, whereas essentially all other animals have the power of manufacturing it. The rate at which animals manufacture it corresponds to the ingestion of around 1 to 10 grams per day, much more than the usually recommended intake for this vitamin.

  I do not know what the situation is as to the ability to manufacture nicotinamide. Dr. Albrecht is going to hunt through the literature, to see which animals require it as a vitamin and which have the power of manufacturing it, and also to find out the rate at which animals manufacture it.

  Dr. A. Hoffer has, as you know, been using nicotinic acid or nicotinamide in amounts of three grams per day (one gram after each meal) in the treatment of nearly all of his patients, and he has reported good results. He has been criticized, and there is, I think, ground for criticism, but another Canadian physician has made a test, in one of the mental hospitals, and has reported a significant improvement in patients receiving nicotinic acid or nicotinamide, in addition to other treatment, as compared with those receiving a placebo.

  Nicotinic acid and nicotinamide are no more toxic than sodium chloride. Something like one-half or a pound constitutes the LD50.

  Mental disease is one of the manifestations of pellagra, and It is cured by nicotinic acid or nicotinamide. This may have been what caused Dr. Hoffer; to try these substances.

  Patients with mental disease are often handled by changing conditions of life enough to permit them to resist environmental stress, and get along satisfactorily. It seems to me that a change in the internal environment of the person, even though it were not a great change, might be enough to permit him to get along, and that several kinds of supportive chemotherapy might be used together, along with psychotherapy and whatever other treatment is necessary. I would like to know whether patients are helped somewhat by the regular ingestion of three grams a day of ascorbic acid and also of three grams a day of nicotinamide, and, perhaps, some quantities of other vital substances. Nicotinic acid and nicotinamide are cheap - only about one cent a gram.

  It may be that this idea is already in the literature. I would be grateful to you if you could give me references, in case that you have heard it expressed before.

I am introducing mention of this subject in some of my lectures. Moreover, a petition is now being circulated among scientists about chemical and biological warfare.

  I agree with you that the problem is an important one, and that we should all try to help to solve it.

  Dear Professor Spenger:

  I have been pleased to read your letter and to learn about your efforts to discuss the stability of nuclei on the basis of the spheron theory.

  Some of the points that you discuss are treated in a paper of mine that is now in the course of publication (Roumanian Journal of Physics). When I receive reprints I shall send one to you.

  I think that some of your questions can be answered by my saying that I consider the nuclei in general to involve resonance among various structures, such as structures of helions and tritons, on the one hand, and of helions and dineutrons, on the other. I am trying now to make the description more precise.

  I think that I used the word trelion, for He3 in my lecture. I have been using this word for a couple of years, but published it first in the new paper that I mention above.

  Much of the discussion in my earlier papers was based on results that I obtained with use of models - cork balls of different sizes.

  It seems clear that the energy of a nucleus is largely determined by the quantized levels involved in the shell model, but that in addition some geometric factors are of significance, and it is the geometric factors that are emphasized in the close-packed spheron model.

  I have received my copy of the program of the Moscow meeting, and have been able to verify your statement to me that you had two long-dead collaborators in the work that you reported on, including one recipient of the Nobel Prize.

  Mamma and I hope to see you and Julia and the children soon. Our schedule calls for us to leave Montreal on BOAC Plight 568 at 10:00 and arrive in London at 9:30 AM, Oct. 19*. We are scheduled then to leave for Montpellier on the 24th.

  If your house is now fixed up, and you are planning to keep us during these days, there is no need for you to make any arrangements for our visit. Otherwise, would you reserve twin-bedroom with bath for us at the Russell Hotel? The reservation should be for the period mentioned above.

  I have written a paper on the structure of graphite, involving some novel arguments. I am looking forward to talking with you about this structure, and also about the work that you have been doing.

  We hope that you are well settled now and that you and the children are going along in your rigorous routine. I hope that the University is agreeable and that your quarters are what you like.

  We are getting ready to leave for Europe and shall go around the 12th of October.

  We are here at the ranch now but are going down to Santa Barbara on Thursday and shan't come back here until we get back from Europe.

  I have several plants of Sasanqua camellias which I shall probably have to dispose of. Also, all of my orchids and a number of other plants. Sasanquas stand heat better than most other camellias and if you have some space on the left side of your house, perhaps you would like to have these. You remember how beautiful they are there in Pasadena.

  I took out some of the bamboo but I have a good bit left. I do not know whether or not there is time for you to come to Santa Barbara before we leave, but it might be useful for you to do so and you could see if there are other things that you might want.

  I forgot to ask you about the coffee table which you made for me and which you took to Palo Alto. I hope that you didn't dispose of it.

  I enjoyed having little Cherry Blossom here and the time went very quickly. Even she said that it didn't seem as if the time had gone by.

  We shall keep in touch with you and we are looking forward to seeing Peter again. We send you much love.

  We have thought of you many times the past months and remember with much pleasure your kindness to us when we were in New York. We have had a very busy summer and are now getting ready to go to Europe.

  My husband broke his leg at the beginning of the summer so we have had to be relatively quiet.

  Even though we have had a rather damp summer, I have managed to get rid of my cough and have felt very well.

  You have probably read that Linus decided to appeal the decision of Judge Silverman. I do not know whether anything can be gained by doing this and certainly it is a great waste of time and money, but the principles involved are important.

  The firm of Louis Nizer will manage the appeal for us.

  We remember with great pleasure our times with you and I hope that we can see you again when we come to New York.

  Dear Linus,

  It was good to be with you on that boat though I did not get to talk to you as much as I would like.

  I am writing the chapter for the LP festschrift though it is harder than I thought. More and more data is becoming available and I am learning more about the problem which makes my simple theory less certain. I am doing more structures but they will certainly not be available by the time I have this done, which will be tomorrow I hope.

  My trip after Athens was reasonably successful. I spent a week in Geneva didling around, three days in Zurich trying to get some artificial substituted muscarines from Peter Waser (with whom I stayed twice in the summer of 1950), a week in Vienna at this Biophysics meeting, which was not a terrible success, and several days in Copenhagen giving a lecture and seeing movies and walking about.

  Julia had the upper house completely redecorated and cleaned by the time I got back. She must have worked hard. You seem to have a fan in Julia. She seems to think you were marvelous on that boat.

  If you got me a half frame in Hong Kong, please send it to the parents who will be over on the 20th. They can bring it to me. They will be here four days according to the plan. It will be good to see then. I have not for two years. They have never seen our house done up.

  Why do you not plan to spend a year in London. It is too cold and wet for you but rather fun. There is quite a lot of exciting stuff going on. I expect I shall be here. This cholinergic structure stuff is quite exciting and I want to get on with the large amount of work to be done. I do net yet know whether I shall get the grant to make my computer data collector. If I do it will take a year. If I do not, I shall have to get some money somewhere else to get a less powerful commercial instrument.

  Can you please get me a copy of the instruction book of a Sherwood S-3000 II FM tuner? You sent me the tuner but the instruction book would help.
