August 3  (Paris)
  • AHP journal entry in journal entitled "France and England 1952 also Toronto" RE: "Mons. Paris thinks it would be a good idea to increase the discussion on fundamental particles: especially their discovery and properties. It said that the French edition of Gen. Chem. wouldn't sell very well even if brought out in paper covers because the French students don't have any money to buy any books. Prof. Paris is carrying on work on the rotation of complexes in crystals: especially the NH4 + ion. He asked when a new edition of the Nature of the Chemical Bond would appear and said there was a great need for a 2nd edition." "Paris. Bernal wrote to be sure we'd come to Birkbeck to talk to Carlyle about the structure of ribonuclease in relation to our protein structures" "Paris. Feather rachis Keratin. Jim Watson suggested that feather rachis keratin might have a completely different structure than that suggested by P and C. he said that the succession of layer lines is that expected for a helix with identity distance 94.6 A. or twice this, and that the infra red data indicate [alpha] helices approximately at right angles to the axis instead of parallel to the axis. He suggested that the repeating unit might be a short segment of [alpha] helix with these units themselves in a helical arrangement. The data in Table I of PandC indicate that the large helix is about 38 A in diameter, and the data in Table II suggest that there might be 31 units in perhaps 4 turns. Examination of the layer lines with use of the equation of [Cochasen?], Crick, and Vand might settle this matter."
  • LP journal entry in journal entitled "France and England 1952 also Toronto" RE: Gen. Chem. Problem. Nitroglycerine (glyceryl trinitate, the explosive in dynamite) is made by C10H5(OH)3 + 3HNO3 [to] C10H5(NO3)3 + H2O. IF dynamite contains - % NG, how much glycerine and how much HNO3 would be needed to make 1 ton?" "I talked with Eygis, [last?] to Wyman."

  • LP journal entry in journal entitled "France and England 1952 also Toronto" RE: "1. Letter to Nature on compound helixes and hair, horn, etc. P and C. 2. PNAS [Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences] description and coordinates of compound helices. P and C. 3. PNAS. Detailed discussion of hair and horn. P, C, others. Call AB[6?] the [alpha] cable? Get someone to put hair in solution and fractionate it. Also porcupine quill. Also feather rachis. Get someone to try to make a preparation of bacterial flagella. How about sperm tails? Nucleic acid- try to predict a structure. Lignin- try to predict a structure. Check the x-ray data for actin and myosin and actomyosin. Perhaps myosin is pure AB[6?], actin pure C."
  • LP journal entry in journal entitled "France and England 1952 also Toronto" RE: "Proteins. I think that the [alpha] helix might bend by a sequence [alpha] - cis - trans - cis - [alpha]" [drawing of this below]. "Todd. Two p. Adenine. Quanine. Cytosine. Uracyl? [Uracil] These four and D- ribofuranose give nucleosides; with phosphoric acid give nucleotides; the four in some sequence give ribonucleic acid. Deoxyribonucleic acid has Deoxy D- ribofuranose. Also a fifth purine or pyrimidine that Todd discovered. All possible dinucleotides have been isolated." "Wilkins and bSeeds. Faraday [Soc.] [about] 1950 showed calf thymus NP and oriented NA to have same plane of purine and pyrimidine res." "Ambrose and Butler IR dichroism of stretched nucleoprotein show plane of planes of purine and pyrimidine rings are normal to direction of stretching of nucleoprotein films. Also position of CO protein-band shows [Beta] stretched chains along stretching axis." "My lecture. Def. [definition] of monomer. Simple chains (held by cov.[covalent] bonds. Shape. single chain gives molecule with no symmetry) if they retain configuration essentially when separated; but if there are several so intertangled that configuration is lost the aggregate is the monomer. Some arbitrariness as in my definition of chem. bond, which has been criticized. Nature of Forces. + -, H- bond, v.d.w. Complementariness. Stickiness of proteins- See single sheet. [drawings of four different helix and chain type structures above]. [in reference to first drawing] "open helix- may give nematic liquid Xls." [in reference to second drawing] "May easily Xlize." [in reference to third drawing] "Pitch may equal molec? diameter; giving tube with extra [unidentified word] stabilization." [in reference to fourth drawing] "Pitch = 2 x molec. diam. Two interpenetrating chains." "Dimetric" [drawing to right] "Leeway of 5 [degrees] might permit second layer or also a third, if diameter is large, giving tube with thicker wall. [drawing of helix? below]. Large helix with five [degrees] leeway could stretch perhaps 100%. [two drawings below]. KH Meyer 1929 (Meyer and Mark). Change way he by splitting off AA res. (ovalb [to] plakalb fibrinogen [to] fibrin) or addition or subtraction of O2 or other small molec. or change in configuration." "Relation [unidentified word] inner and outer might cause bend. In general this would give a larger helix. Perhaps triple chain flagellae are 3 such. [small illustration to the right]. H.R. Crane." "Fraser. Octopus sperm heads can be oriented by smearing, show IR dichroismas in nucleic acid oriented. But F says freq. of NH suggests [alpha] helices, at rt. angles [drawing] to stretching axis, although he prefers [beta] [unidentified symbol] to axis." "Edsall says fibrin forms fibers 100 A to 1000 A or more in diameter. The show striations with period 250 A (Hall says 230 [plus or minus] 30A- some variation). Just 1/3 length of fibrinogen molecule. Our (Rudall) 118 [Angstroms] repeat = 1/2 this period." "1. Make some H bonds (rods) with [plus or minus] 0.1 [Angstoms] extensiblility and compressibility [four drawings below] Aluminum bent to this shape?"
