    August 31, 1964

    Mr. Thomas Fahy

    205 Los Aguajes, Apt. E

    Santa Barbara, California

    Dear Mr. Fahy:

My wife and I are pleased that you should write to us about the reception.

    It was a great success.

We are pleased to be in Santa Barbara. I am still devoting most of my time to scientific work — all theoretical, however, and carried out with the aid of only one assistant.

I am glad to be reminded of the nitroglycerin lecture in 1943. I used the same trick for several years, in my lecture on explosives. I had a large bottle filled with a viscous white liquid, and packed in cotton in a large wooden box. As I carefully removed the cotton from around the bottle and then gingerly lifted the bottle up to show it to the audience, I said "Nitroglycerin is a colorless viscous liquid, highly explosive. It is made by adding to a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid the colorless viscous glycerin, trihydroxypropane, a sample of which I have here in this bottle."

    Sincerely yours,

    LP:mjh Linus Pauling

    Enc.
