  • Letter from LP to Charles J. Conrad, RE: LP has not yet prepared his analysis of Conrad's April 1964 memorandum on the speech LP gave at Cal Poly. LP writes now, however, to make some comments about it. LP considers Conrad's introduction to exhibit unethical trickery, in that it indirectly insinuates that LP is a communist. LP considers this insinuation to be contemptible. Conrad's statement that many of LP's remarks were "half truths designed to mislead his audience" is untrue. Conrad's statements about the Fifth Pugwash Conference were false. It was held in a school building, not at Mr. Eaton's home. It was not a secret meeting; it was publicized in the news and the report of the Conference was widely published. Conrad misled the recipients of his memorandum by saying that documents on the Pugwash Conference were sent to Nikita Khrushchev, while neglecting to mention that the same material was sent to President Eisenhower. Conrad also mentions that the Soviet Academy of Sciences endorsed and participated in the Conference, but fails to make similar mention of the American Academy of Sciences. Conrad says that he was unable to obtain information on the Conference, but he could have easily done so by writing to the Foreign Secretary of the United States Academy of Sciences. LP finds Conrad's memorandum embarrassing only in that he is ashamed that the Minority Floor Leader of the Assembly of the State of California would have written such a document. Dr. Peter Pauling

    95 Lansdowne Rd.

    London, W. 11, England

    Dear Peter:

Mama and I were happy to see you and the family, and I enjoyed talking with you about many subjects. I notice that a recent issue of Science contains a book review of the book on The Chemistry of Imperfect Crystals. I enclose the pages containing this book review, with the thought that you might be interested to read it while preparing your review.

We found everything in good shape on getting here. Linda and her family have moved into our house. We have not yet learned whether the Santa Barbara house is ready yet, but probably we shall move up in a couple of weeks. The flight home was uneventful.

    Much love from

    Linus Pauling:ffd

    Dr. J. W. Linnett, F.R.S.

    Queens College

    Oxford, England

    Dear Linnett:

I have read with interest your little book on The Electronic Structure of Molecules, a new approach. I think that this book is a really significant contribution to the theory of molecular structure.

I am pleased that you should have included me with Sidgwick and Lewis in your dedication.

    With best regards, I am

    Sincerely yours,

    Linus Pauling:cp

P.S. I have not noticed any significant errors. Figure 18 is upside down. Figure 21 is a bit off - the top atom should be moved to the right a little, as can be seen by checking the center of the base.

    cc. W. G. Suter
