    11 April 1962

    Dear Bragg:

On my return to Pasadena from a lecture tour for the American Friends (Quakers) I have found your letter of 13 March.

I am sorry to say that I never completed the work on cancrinite. During the years following 1930 I began a number of investigations on the structure of various minerals. Some of them I was able to carry to completion, but some remained incomplete when I shifted from the structure of minerals to another field, the structure of organic substances, and especially those of biological interest.

There were probably several factors involved in this shift, but I think that you will be amused to learn about one of them. I attempted to get a grant from the Penrose Fund of the American Geological Society, in order to give support to a continuation of my work on the structure of minerals. The grant was not awarded to me, and I applied to the Rockefeller Foundation, getting a grant for one year to support work in this general field, including inorganic structures as well as the structure of minerals. As the end of the year approached it seemed pretty clear to me that I would have difficulty in getting further support from the Rockefeller Foundation unless I became interested in chemistry in relation to biology, and in fact I was successful in getting support for work in that field.

    With best regards, I am

    Sincerely yours,

    [Linus Pauling]

    16 April 1962

    To: Dr. William Dove

    From: Linus Pauling

    Subject: Anesthesia

If you have not already talked with Dr. Vinograd about density gradient ultracentrifugation, I would be pleased if you would do so.

A year or so ago I talked with Dr. Vinograd about the possibility of testing the theory of anesthesia by density gradient ultracentrifugation, and he has a flask of xenon that was obtained in connection with this possibility. He has done some work on bovine serum albumin in relation to degree of hydration, but has not yet carried out experiments on the effect of chloroform or xenon or other anesthetic agent. He has had this possibility in mind, however.

Also, Dr. Vinograd has told me about experiments by Scatchard and others on binding of chloride ion by bovine serum albumin in slightly acid solutions. I think that you would find it worth while to discuss this matter with him.

    25 April 1962

    Dear Peter,

Mama and I were up at the ranch last week and I put in the time writing the paper on the one-electron-bond theory of antiferromagnetism and ferrimagnetism, essentially as you had written it. Today I have been looking up same references and I came across a paper that has to be mentioned. It is by J. B. Goodenough, Phys. Rev. 100, 564 (1955).

He uses the argument about the Hund's-first-rule stabilization of structures with a valence electron parallel to the magnetic moment of the iron atom or manganese atom, and he says that this would cause the covalent bond to have a greater contribution in which the shared electron has positive spin than for a shared electron with negative spin. He calls such an interaction "semi covalent exchange."

I have not had time to read his whole paper, because it is getting late in the day and tomorrow Mama and I are flying to Washington (we are going to have dinner with President and Mrs. Kennedy in the White House). Would you read Goodenough's paper carefully, and see whether or not he uses our other argument, about 90-degree angles between one-electron bonds with parallel spin - that is, the angle on the nonmetal atom.

If he does not use this argument, then I think that we can go ahead with the publication of our paper, but with acknowledgment of Goodenough's contribution.

Would you write to me as soon as you can, telling just what sort of argument Goodenough uses, as compared with ours.

Also, I think that he discusses essentially only the perovskite structures. You might check up in the abstracts to see whether he has published anything later, about other structures.

    Much love from,

    [Linus Pauling]
