- Letter from Dr. Otto Emersleben to LP, RE: Written in German. Says that he heard from Professor Born that LP is interested in Emersleben's work on the potential of crystal lattices. Informs LP that he is sending him a reprint of this work from the 1923 Physical Magazine. Discusses the work of certain 3-dimensional problems which relate to the computation of an appropriate 2-dimensional problem in the 1925 Physical Magazine, which he is also sending. Explains to LP that the work lastly mentioned refers to a hydraulic problem called "The Darcy Filter Law," and that the functions computed there are usable for other 2-dimensional problems as well. Dearest Ava Helen:
I love you, darling, very much. I've just read over some old letters from you. ... Last night after mailing your letter I went to the physics seminar. Then I went to the Lab. and talked with Cone about his crystal structure work. Then I came home and read Time till 12

and went to bed. I got up at 9 this morning and dictated some letters inviting people to our symposia and polished up a note to the Phys Rev about my work. Then I talked to Gianque about the

ammonia molecule and asked him to come to Pasadena and talk and stay with us. He doesn't want to talk but he may come. At lunch time Lewis asked me to have dinner with him next Tuesday (with the Kramers) and to go to SF to hear Claire Lux afterwards. Now Lawrence + I are going to the hospital together to call on Bernice Brode. This afternoon Lewis is going to say something in Chem Seminar about the chemical bond — at lunch he asked me if I were ready to take a pummelling [?] + I said "Yes — are you."
I love you, lovely girl.

Dearest girl:
This afternoon after lunch I went with Lawrence to see Mrs. Brode. She looks just the same. After a while I left Lawrence with her and went to see Mrs. Latimer — as her first visitor. She looked really beautiful, and I told her so. I think she's glad she has her little baby girl. Then I came away with Lawrence and then had some tulips sent to Mrs. Latimer. Then I went to the Lab, and looked around at some freshman labs a while, and said hello to König, and told Latimer that I'd visited his wife and thought she was beautiful. He said she worried sometimes about some of her features — pug nose especially. Then I went to a tea in the physics building given by the physics

sorority for the physics staff. I talked with a girl (tall, blue eyes) named Miss Dempsey, who tries to study mathematics — although she didn't seem to know much. She seemed to be on her best behaviour — I didn't mention that I was married! After about twenty minutes I went to Latimer's office and had some wine to prepare us for the chem. seminar. Then Latimer presented a paper. After it was over Lewis made some remarks, and I gave a rebuttal, and it developed into a rough and tumble, knock down and dragout affair. I think I came out a little ahead. It was very exciting.
I love you, darling. I hope the two weeks pass by quickly. Love to Linus and Jeff.
