  • Letter from LP to Henry R. Luce, Editor-in-Chief, Life Magazine. [Filed under LP Correspondence: (Life), #219.3]
    16 October 1963

    Mr. Henry R. Luce

    Editor-in-Chief

    LIFE Magazine

    Rockefeller Center

    New York 20, New York

    Dear Sir:

I write to express to you my extreme displeasure with the actions of LIFE Magazine, of which you are editor-in-Chief.

A few days ago I had the great experience of being notified that I had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1962 by the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament. I am happy with this recognition of my efforts over many years to achieve world peace and morality, which I summarized in the concluding sentences of my book No More War! (1958), as follows:

"I believe to morality, in justice, in humanitarianism. We must recognize now that the power to destroy the world by the use of nuclear weapons is a power that cannot be used - we cannot accept the idea of such monstrous immorality. The time has now come for morality to take its proper place in the conduct of world affairs; the time has now come for the nations of the world to submit to the just regulation of their conduct by international law."

I consider that the bomb-test treaty, which became effective on 10 October 1963, when the signed copies of the treaty were deposited in Moscow, London, and Washington, represents an important first step in this direction, and I was especially pleased that the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament should have selected that day for announcing the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to me.

Two days ago I was approached by representatives of LIFE Magazine, who asked if I would be willing to sacrifice two days to them, in order that they might obtain information and take photographs to be used in an article in LIFE Magazine. I agreed, and at 9:00 A.M. on Tuesday 15 October Miss Marge Byers and Mr. Don Craven came to my home. My wife and I spent the morning with them at our home, and I then devoted the whole of the afternoon of that day to them in my laboratory in the California Institute of Technology.

My wife and I, our daughter, and our three grandchildren then spent the major part of the nest morning, Wednesday 16 October 1963, in our home, in talking with Miss Byers and permitting Mr. Craven to take photographs of us. My wife and I had also agreed to go by plane to our ranch is the San Simeon-Big Sur district, with Miss Byers and Mr. Craven, in order that the afternoon of that day could be devoted to further discussions and pictography.

Earlier experience with the two magazines TIME and LIFE, of which you are Editor-in-Chief, had made it evident to me that representatives of these magazines cannot be relied upon to tell the truth. Miss Byers and Mr. Craven had assured me that the article would be published about my wife and me and our family in LIFE Magazine would be a responsible and truthful one. I felt, however, that I could not accept their assurances. I accordingly told them, on 15 October 1963, that before going ahead I would have to have assurance from some person of responsibility in the LIFE New York office.

They telephoned New York, and asked me to steak with an editor, Richard Stolley. Mr. Stolley identified himself to me by name, and then, after some discussion with me about my desire to be reassured, made the following statements to me:

“I will have control of this story. It will be fair. It will be honest. It won't be snide. It will not be the kind of story you read this morning.* We won’t double-cross you. We are, of course, going to talk about the controversies you have been in."

(* The story that I had seen that morning, and had read to Mr. Stolley over the telephone, was the story in TIME magazine about the award of the Nobel Fence Prize to me - a story in which there is unconscionable misrepresentation end the vicious use of pejoratives.)

I then asked Miss Byers to read the statement that Mr. Stolley had made, and which I had, written down, to Mr. Stolley and to ask him if he had in fact made this statement to me. After she had done so, Miss Byers made the following written statement:

“Yes, Dick Stolley did say this to Dr. Pauling on the phone. Signed, Margey Byers.”

I then permitted Miss Byers and Mr. Craven to continue with their questioning and photography yesterday afternoon and this evening.

At noon today, just before we were scheduled to leave for the airport in order to fly to our ranch near San Simeon with Miss Byers and Mr. Craven, Miss Byers and Mr. Craven came to my laboratory. Miss Byers then said to me “We have just learned that LIFE has gone to press with a very unfriendly editorial. Hence we just got to quit with this story.”

I recognize that the commitment made to me by Mr. Stolley refers literally only to the story, and not to the editorial; but I agree with the members of your staff that your publication of an unfair, dishonest or snide editorial about me would run counter to the spirit of the commitment, and I can understand their action in quitting with the story.

I point out that, at a time when I am overloaded with work, I have sacrificed a day and a half to LIFE Magazine, on the assurance given to me by the editor in charge of the story.

I consider that you, as Editor-in-Chief, are to be held responsible for this inexcusable treatment of me by LIFE Magazine, and I write to express to you my indignation, and my contempt for your magazines.
